The worst part of it is that every couple of months or so they update the game and add a dozen or so levels, just to make sure that you'll be hooked on it forever. It's a sick world we live in.

Those horrible Steelers and their 6 Super Bowl wins...

This world's insane.
Okay, true, you're making fun of women's habits surrounding their men (or men in general) watching football. And honestly, it's funny. I'm AM kinda just fucking with you.

Also following a team that's not even your home team because of past success is lame a fuck. 6 Superbowls? So? Most of the people on the current Steelers weren't even on the teams that won their last two, and their other four happened about the time the Woolly Mammoth went extinct. My Seahawks, who I've rooted for my whole life through good and REALLY bad seasons, are looking to do it THIS YEAR. Now that's some shit!

Love you, though, Keith. I think you're a supremely talented fellow...even if you can't tell me what a nickle defense is without looking it up on the interwebz.

because candy crush works doesn't make it not scummy.

i stand by buyer beware. it's part of navigating the world. the exploitative prey on weakness.

Oh, that's right. I withdraw that particular comment, then. (but not the part about basking in ancient Super Bowl victories) Anyway, go Steelers! LOL.. See, Keith, not everyone is fucking with you. Some have your back.

Of course they are. And good for them. I don't call them weak though. I call the companies that do it, what a brilliant marketing team.

Angry Birds has a free version. If you want more levels, pay for it.

Angry Birds Friends is free on Facebook. If you want power-ups, pay for it.

KATG is free, if you want VIP, pay for it.

Oh look! Every commercial on TV, billboard, advertisement, radio commercial, banner ad, YouTube commercial, Google ad, whatever - they advertise a product and use marketing to try to convince you to buy it.

That dumb article you linked could be summed up in 2 words - marketing works.

She doesn't need to play Candy Crush in order to understand how business and marketing works. It's very, very simple. Give people a taste and if they want more they can either pay for more or not.

The strategies used to design these games are the same strategies that scientists discovered could be used to get lab mice to become addicted to pushing a lever 100 times to get a food pellet. Scientists have discovered and perfected the frequencies and difficulty levels that games have to achieve in order to stimulate the release of dopamine in the brain in reaction to certain rewards.
What strategies are you talking about? Free samples at the grocery store are awesome. Did a scientist engineer them to trick my dopamine levels into *making* me buy more? No. It's called marketing - if you want more, buy it.

It's the same things that casinos do to get people addicted to gambling, only casino's have the disadvantage of government regulation ensuring that there are at least some barriers to entry. These games are available 24/7 in the palm of your hand, and at least casinos are honest about the fact that you're playing with money from the get-go.
That's horseshit as well. They all offer play-money games to get people to play for real money. Again, if you want more, pay for it just like any other industry.

The people who make these "Free-to-Play" scam games are not the same geeks who made Pac-Man and charged you a quarter to play them
The geeks that programmed games aren't the same ones that were in marketing and sales. They sold them to bars, arcades, gas stations, wherever. It was the exact same thing you seem to be against. Pretty lights, graphics, overall marketing, if you wanna play, give them a quarter. If you want to keep playing, give them more quarters.

Quote:
You only have to look at the people playing these games to understand it. A middle-aged housewife who never played Mario, never went to an arcade, and wouldn't dream of picking up an Xbox controller, suddenly finds a game she loves so much that she's ignoring her starving kids to get another cow in Farmville? That only happens when something gets into her brain on an unnaturally primal level.
Don't equate rational behavior with pure insanity. Given your example, the middle-aged housewife was batshit to begin with and blames Ben and Jerry for her obesity.
