However, both are actually on the upswing. Should the President of the United States take credit for that? Not any more than the position being blamed for their troubles. POTUS deserves a little blame and a little credit. War sucks, but defense spending is one of the biggest stimulus to the economy. It also has historically, and continues to, be one of the biggest drivers of innovation. |

I wonder what excuses people will think of when NJ and NY go under water from global warming. Ah, those cities were disintegrating for years! |

the word United doesn't hand over whole hog the responsibility of the entire nation to Washington. the Constitution explicitly limits the federal government's powers over the individual States.
i think we'd be in better shape if we'd stop trying to blanket legislate this big ole girl and let our States get back to the business of largely running themselves. |

I'm not saying it's good they've been disintegrating. I'm saying this has been going on under many presidents. And things are getting better now. But I'm not sure I'd compliment Obama for it anyway.

No single President or person is going to change culture. And our culture HAS been shifting, but it takes time and it takes advocacy. Until the early 80's, it was legal to rape your wife in most US states (rape statutes were worded to explicitly exclude spouses). That wasn't even really that long ago. And they just updated the federal definition again to include all forced penetration within the definition of rape -- previously the feds were basically omitting the rape of men from their reports due to an imprecise definition. Laws change as the culture changes.
