Happy anniversary KATG!
I'm a Johnny-come-lately who got on board after the Maron episode. All the same, I have loved every minute of your show, especially the day I tried to get a bunch of my friends to start listening just as Keith had a ten minute screaming fit about something I don't remember. P.S. On upskirts: "How is that not death?" - I laughed for a solid two minutes at that alone. |

I found you guys through Dawn and Drew which were your rivals (kinda?) at the time. I read an article about them so I checked them out, went to podcast alley and that led to you guys. I was going through a really bad time when I started listening. I got bed bugs from my upstairs neighbors in 2005 which was before bed bugs were a widely known "epidemic" in NYC. My landlord wouldn't pay for an exterminator and nobody would help me for less than 2k per room so I took the DIY route. I bought 3 gallons of pesticide, put my earbuds in and listened to you guys and/or D&D while I went crazy on every room, spraying chemicals everywhere.
Luckily those hours of anguish and bug poison were alleviated by all of the great shows you did but I ESPECIALLY loved clown Mondays. I would laugh until I cried sometimes (literally) because I was so stressed out and trying to get through it on my own while staying sane. I had financial problems thanks to having to replace stuff, I was in school and working, I was having bad skin reactions to the bug bites and obviously didn't want to risk my friends/boyfriend getting it so I was isolated for a bit. I literally felt like a leper or something lol. I really am grateful that you guys unknowingly got me through that ordeal with humor instead of me losing my shit to a full on breakdown. |

I started listening because my husband wouldn't stop talking about this podcast. He started playing clips for me which I found pretty funny. I needed something to occupy my time while at work doing mind numbing data entry. Cue less than a year after that and I was getting their logo tattooed on my body. This podcast has helped me through some very rough times including several bouts of depression and cancer. Word cannot even begin to describe my gratitude.
On the topic of mental health-while psychiatrists can provide psychotherapy in addition to prescribing drugs, many of them only focus on the drug part of it. Many will only do 30-50 minute sessions once every 3 months or so which is why it is so important to be in talk therapy while trying medications. As a social worker, unless they have been on meds before, I recommend seeing a therapist or psychologist first before medications. Diet change is helpful, but many people need the medication to get the brain chemistry in such a way that people have the energy and motivation to make changes. There are cases where medications can just be a boost for someone where they can eventually get off of them. There are other people like me that have other medical conditions that fuck up my brain chemistry to where I will always need an antidepressant (diabetes, hypothyroidism, PCOS). While I know Chemda is coming from a good place and does make some good points, it does drive me nutty how anti-medicine she seems to be. I'm recalling past episodes where she was sick and Keith couldn't convince her to take NyQuil or DayQuil because she felt that get body should just be able to deal with its own. U acknowledge that she has said that she is not, but for some reason to me it doesn't come across that way. Basically, depression should be addressed in multiple ways-brain chemistry, life events, diet, and other medical issues.
