Rude Dudes
First off, obviously people being rude (i.e. men who cat call women etc...) is wrong.
Chemda always sounds so tormented when the subject comes up. Of course when you actually feel unsafe, which Chemda says usually is not the case, that is a problem that needs to be addressed. But as far as the apparently constant rudeness, what happened to just IGNORING people? I hear crazy, rude, stupid shit all the time and I just pretend like I can't hear the person, it just takes the wind out of their sails. When Chemda talks about feeling unsafe but also confronting and antagonizing the person by saying "yeah whats up? you said something didn't you?", that is purposely being confrontational and escalating the situation. (also, something I wouldnt do if I didnt feel safe.) I understand the reason behind it, to keep the person accountable. But, by doing so you are also acknowledging them, giving them power, and becoming more involved. A lot of this problem sounds like its a choice you are making. Again, I understand the reasoning, but its not something you HAVE to do, if it is such a hassle (which it seems to be by how very frustrated Chemda always sounds), just ignore it. Just to be clear, I'm a big fan of Chemda's, just offering a different point of view. Love the show -Marc |

This is silly because obviously trying to ignore it would be the first thing she's done.
Also, we would now like to hear what the crazy, rude, stupid shit you keep hearing that you ignore is, Marc. |

As far as my examples, just this month: 1. Walking out of a showering area at a festival back to a campsite with two female friends, a bro-looking dude said "nice towel fag" (It was a normal California-flag towel) right to me for absolutely no reason. I wasn't pleased but I just pretended I didn't hear him, because I just don't care enough to do anything about it. Maybe if I was gay I would've been more offended. 2. Playing cards at a local poker room, I hear shit all the time, especially from older men. Recently a dude kept talking about "wetties" (I assumed he meant wetbacks, a dated mexican slur) and "homos". Sometimes I'll interject becuase obviously its offensive to me, even though I'm not mexican or gay, but most of the time, even though it bothers me, I just let people sound stupid and crazy, why start a dialogue? 3. I've had people who have beefs with clients of mine (Im an attorney) call me and say crazy shit like threaten to get my Bar license taken away because of how shady I am (I am not shady btw) or that they are never gonna stop fighting me in court. If I responded to all the nonsense, I would never get anything done. Look, I know its apples and oranges because I'll never know what its like to be a woman having a man make you feel uncomfortable in that way. But if we are specifically talking about random hoots and hollers, that is absolutely something that can be ignored. If you choose not to, I understand that too, but it is a CHOICE you are making to try and change things, which is admirable. |

Now picture the more personal ones (like "nice towel, fag") were said and yelled to you constantly EVERY TIME you left the house.
It was said to you ONCE and you remember it. I like that they're called hoots and hollers. It makes it cute. |

Once in the past month, not once ever, I hear crazy all the time, and so do you. I'm not telling her to ignore them, I'm saying its an option because she is so upset and looking for a solution. There is never going to be a solution for outbursts from idiots. And obviously I'm not saying its o.k. or acceptable.
