Being a godparent is not necessarily the same thing as agreeing to care for a child if something happens to the parents. A parent certainly can choose the same person/people to act as godparents and trustees/custodians of the child, but it doesn't always work that way.

And you can't be tricked into accepting children by agreeing to be godparents. If you're asked to be godparents and it's not made explicitly clear that you're being asked to care for the children if something happens to the parents, the parents aren't really setting things up very well, ethically or legally.
