A long time ago I got sick of everyone standing around staring at the food and waiting for someone else to start or the host to give permission to eat. I'm almost always the first person to go for it and not once has that been an issue. It only takes me putting the first piece of food on my plate for the tension to leave the room and for everyone to join in. You're welcome. Same goes with leftovers and second helpings. Has everyone got enough because if you say yes I'm helping myself. Being timid wont get you the rest of the crackling.

I usually do the same, and even make a show of the fact that I am going first.
