i think it's a welcome approach to the problems that school is facing. at the very least, to make sure these kids get seen as human beings, to know what that feels like, and are able to see other people as human beings.

I think what this specific school is doing is awful. I don't think they are doing anything to help these students be successful, positively contributing members of society. And because of this, I don't think that their future role in society is reflective of what is possible.

But I also don't think it means that they can't possibly change given a better set of circumstances.

I think that's the fundamental core of this debate -

Do I think this means these particular students are beyond all hope, if they were in a district had better leadership and a better strategic plan, addressing the holistic experience of the child and not just their academic experience? No. I have seen personally the change students have gone through given the kind of supports I described in my earlier post.

Do I think THIS school district (based on their public response to date) has the leadership, drive, and capacity, to turn some of these students around? Sadly, no. Maybe they will prove me wrong, but I'm not seeing any positive evidence so far.
