Like, that there are different kinds and even black hair appears strong, it's sometimes very sensitive.

Black women sometimes die their hair blond, and lots of them do straighten it. Is getting " boxer braids" different for a non black person?
And please do not say something like " you don't know how it is to be black in America. Of course not .
I don't even know how it is to be white in America.

Black culture is met with a lot of racism in this country.
Part of the culture is hair.
Taking an example from the show, phoebe mentioned that black people are told they can't wear certain hair styles to work. It is considered unprofessional. The "styles" can simply be their hair in a natural state.

THEN people appropriate the hairstyles and get fashion and cool credit for it. Unlike black people who get called things like "gangsters" and "thugs".

I had no clue about the black hair topic at all before Patrice talked about it on a show. No clue which one but she was talking about setting fire to the hair salon? does somebody know what episode that was?

Watched a lot of youtube videos and the Chris rock documentary and wow did I feel stupid afterwards.

I went through a school leadership training program and they directly told the black women in my cohort that they had to be very conscious of who sat on the local school councils at schools where they were interviewing. They were encouraged not to wear their hair natural until after they got the job because people would make assumptions about them and they would face biases that had nothing to do with their ability to do the job.

I'm a white woman and I was told to straighten my hair before interviews so I looked more "polished". But for me, that is a temporary decision, something that costs me maybe 20 - 25 dollars, or free if I do it at home, and something that goes away the first time I wash it. A few of the black women in my program had spent months or years growing out their natural hair and were now being told it wasn't acceptable.

And then it just follows with the cultural appropriation issues. White cultural biases against black hair led to the development of hair styles like braids and locs. Then white people adopt those hair styles, they give them a new name and claim to be starting a new trend. Hence the problem with "boxer braids" or when Vogue attributed Lupita N'yongo's hair inspiration to Audrey Hepburn instead of Nina Simone or zulu tribal hair styles (https://www.360nobs.com/2016/05/lupi...d-nina-simone/).

Apia,

Jesus are you reading any of this? Before anyone tries to explain this again, explain to us what appropriation means to you.

Thank you,
Chemda

So what do we think about Standhope's account? In the past, he always seemed like a blatantly honest (even to a fault) kind of person. I generally err on the side of the victim when I hear about stories like this, and I realize that his account does not proclude some physical abuse that may have occurred after they left. However this is on a $400 million scale which could be a strong motivator to lie. After reading the Standhope story I am leaning that way. Maybe I am just guilty of not wanting to believe that he would do that.

Is it ok for me to run to black music on my phone? I'm not repeating any words.

Our numbers, like 1,2,3 and their friends are Arabic. Isn't this also appropriation?
And please don't scream.
What they were talking about on the show is more cultural misappropriation. Which is stealing, or unfairly adopting elements of a culture. Blacks despite being in this country since its inception are still seen, culturally, as other, or outside.

On the whole Americans do it on a very subconscious level. Which makes it sting even more.

Yes from everything I read about appropriation there is an element of a privileged majority taking something on from a minority that wasn't well know or used to be considered for lack of a better word "bad" and now that the majority does it that makes it cool/trendy/hip

Or as a general rule if you can find something as a Halloween costume (or Karneval for us Germans - Kölle Alaaf!, Wiesbaden Helau! ) its got a good chance to be appropriation.
