I thought the president is not voted on by either the house or the senate?

I am talking about throwing away my vote for wither house of reps or senate in Australia.

FYI for the election of the POTUS from Wikipedia

The election of President and Vice President of the United States is an indirect election in which citizens of the United States who are registered to vote in one of the fifty states or Washington, D.C. cast ballots for a set of members of the U.S. Electoral College, known as electors.

I believe New York awards its electoral votes to the candidate who wins the state's popular vote. (If I'm wrong on this I'm sure Micheal or someone will correct me)

Yes, basically you said if you throw your vote away then that would cause the candidate you do not want to be elected.

In the state of New York that could only happen there was a hell of an accident. New York is about 64% Dem and only 36% Rep.

In 2012 Obama got 4,485,877 votes and Mitt got 2,490,496. So if you throw away your vote AND 997,690 other people change from Dem to Rep, then your decision is stupid.

But that would be a hell of an accident.

Kinda depressing but very interesting reading

Kinda but the New York Times text he is linking to is all about Plato, so that is even older

But seriously good link, I like Roman history a lot. Give me Horses as senators and "Carthage must fall" references any day please
