I was driving to work this morning while listening to the show and I wanted to just throw my 2 cents in on the "college is too expensive" "try community college first" talk . . .

For context, I'm the principal of a college prep school on the south side of Chicago where the vast majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch based on family income, where nearly a quarter of my students qualify for benefits under the McKinney Vento Program (which provides protections for homeless students), and where our most recent graduating class had 95% college enrollment and among those students the average out of pocket cost to the family for the first year of school was less than $2100. This includes a student who is now a freshman at Howard and many others at fantastic schools both public and private around the country.

As someone working in a school, I'm very aware of the message out there about college and it's costs, and about the potential opportunities at community colleges. But that is not the whole story. Most community colleges (not all, but most) do not have anywhere near the kind of supports that other universities do, particularly for helping minority students or first generation college students deal with the challenges of college and persist through to graduation.

Community colleges are a great option for students who can persist independent of supports, who can navigate the 4 year college search and application process independently after they earn a 2 year degree, and who can be self-regulating.

But for students who might be in desperate need of social and emotional supports, academic advisory supports, life-skill supports around budgets or grocery shopping, etc, Universities with high tuitions and large endowments, that offer wonderful aid packages and scholarships in addition to federal aid and Pell grants, a private 4 year college might be a significantly better choice with a markedly better outcome.

Just my two cents . . .

I liked, her. Warm, funny and not phased by Keith's shenanigans at all.

I'd love to hear more from Erin.

Wink Superscript 2

If you cant use superscript for the 2 then you should not use the 2 in the formula . The formula should look like this instead E=mcc (Capital E but lowercase m & c). I only point this out because I don't want Keith's scientific poll to be skewed because of a mistake in a formula.
