Maybe Patrice could fill in for Chemda? I can't imagine she's doing anything.

That would satisfy my 2009 KATG fantasies, anyway.

please fix this poll and attach a race to it. Non-black people with dread's hair look a mess all the time. When I see black people with dreads they are generally clean and tightened. Not the mess nest you see on a white hippie's head

I agree. I think Keith is picturing white people dreads which tend to look like the Grinch's fingers.

Google "locs" and it's page after page of black people with neat locs.

If you need to see examples on black men Google "dread head" pages and pages of super neat locs.

Side note: A large part of the community decided to drop the "dread" part of the hairstyle name because of its racist origins. That's why there is a noticeable racial difference between the searches "dreadlocks" and "locs"

agreed. If I lived in a black community I imagine I would see more salon-style dreads, but because I live in seattle its almost always crusty trust-fund whites with poop dreads

I agreed with Keith and the guest on this one:

Black hair is not a choice, dreadlocks are a choice.

I think Chemda was thinking (and correct me if I'm wrong) that disallowing dreadlocks is racist because it is a black hairstyle. What the court said was that regardless of whether it "black" or not, it's still a hairstyle - a choice. That's what makes it okay for an employer to ban them.

Most of society sees dreadlocks as dirty, messy, and lazy. It's racist. Chemda was right that no hairstyle can really be compared: even mohawks are mostly acceptable now and I know an executive director of a big firm who has one of those half-shaved haircuts. None of that changes that hairstyle is a choice - and you can choose not to work for dick employers who won't allow them.

it's more than a cosmetic choice, it's functional. black hair takes maintenance and care white hair doesn't require. part of those maintenance measures include locs and braids. if your hair is neatly done, i don't see the daggum problem in a professional setting. banning managing textured hair in ways other than straightening it to appeal to European beauty standards is racist, invasive, and dumb dumb stupid.

There is no legitimate nonracist reason to ban locs.

Locs can fit literally any aesthetic you need them to depending on how you style them.

It is actually easier (less time consuming and less damaging) for a person with locs to fit into what is considered professional dress than it is for me- a person with thick natural black hair.

As a matter of fact, the only way I can wear my hair in a bun or ponytail every day for work without damaging my hair is by mimicking locs by putting my hair in twists or braids.
