Hugging is my favorite form of greeting, however I'm not a woman & I totally get where they're coming from, so I never go for it myself unless it's clear it's a mutual thing. On the subject of catcalling - I think that a gay guy catcalling a straight guy vs. a straight guy catcalling a woman comparison is off. When a straight guy catcalls a woman, especially more than once, there's a perceived threat to the woman which is why it's never ok. When a gay guy does it to a straight guy, I highly doubt the straight guy feels threatened in the same capacity as the woman. Most guys just laugh it off, unless of course you're doing it to a homophobe, in which case it's the gay guy (like myself) who risks potentially getting their face punched in.
As far as the whole "sometimes you just need to tell people they're wrong" thing, for the most part I think that's bullshit. I've heard the "homosexuality is a choice" argument a few times, and every time it makes my blood boil. But I would never tell that person they're just wrong and they just need to accept it. You ask that person why they think that, give reasons for your side of the argument, and slowly but surely whittle down their argument without succumbing to stubborn rhetoric. And if they refuse to see your argument, you calmly give up. When you tell a person they're wrong & they just need to accept it, you drive them further away from your perspective and they stand by their convictions even harder, and it gives the impression that you don't actually want to change their mind at all. I'm not saying that Jenn and Chemda didn't give sufficient arguments to Adam, but phrases like that stifle conversation. |

here's the thing about growing up a girl: people don't respect your body autonomy. i /hated/ hugging strangers when i was a kid, but damned if every time i was introduced to an adult it was "give me some sugar" or "come here and let me pick you up" (if they even asked at all). my brilliant kid solution was to start telling people i was out of whatever they were after. no hugs today, suckas, and i'm not goin' to the store til next damn week.
the time i was sexually assaulted (yes, all women) was by a guy i didn't know, but with whom i was making small talk at the river, going in for a hug and just straight up putting his hands under my jacket and groping my breasts. it didn't fuck my head up too much; he didn't chase me when i scurried away, just went back to fishing. the whole thing was eerily nonchalant. i worry a lot about politing myself into dangerous situations. |

What about little people? I think Peter Dinklage would slam-dunk a hug, on the sneak tip, on your person. "I bring my hand up..." I bet a serious hugger could get in there. |

I'm totally into amateur porn where dudes expose themselves (exhib) to randos like delivery men, plumbers, drivers, etc. the point isn't "oh they're gonna get so turned on that we're gonna fuck." it's just exciting to expose yourself when you know its wrong. And when its someone doing work for you there's no where for them to go, so the awkward terrible moment lasts longer
