I re-listened to that bit right near the end when Keith says "What if a magician is having sex with us right now and we don't even know it? God damn it they're good" about a dozen times.

It's just one of many, many riffed, throwaway moments I bet was forgotten in the studio 15 seconds after the mics were switched off but there's something magic in the ridiculousness of how he acts as if he's accepted that it's a completely real possibility, and it couldn't have landed any better. The way he delivers the God damn it they're good is nothing short of magnificent.

I'd nominate it for some kind of award, but it's not something that can be clipped and still work without the weight/set-up of much of the preceding hour, since it's pretty much an improvised pay-off to all that, but it as aces to me so I didn't want to leave it un-yapped about.

The thing about Southern stereotypes is that they are mostly about things like confederate flags and hillbillies and stuff like that.

Those same stereotypes can be made about Northern states if you look at them as a whole rather than just the big cities.

New York State outside of NYC is just as terrible. I've heard Boston is the most racist city in the US.

Meanwhile, southern states have more progressive metropolitan areas too. Atlanta, Miami, Houston, New Orleans. But the focus is on people who live in towns with 4 stop lights.

The inconsistency of stereotyping is just super annoying to me.

Exactly! It's like, the north has their hate flags, but no one's talking about them!

there's a difference in the way Southern hillbilly fucks approach their stuff. the heritage edge is not to be underappreciated.

4 stop light towns have progressives in them. it does a disservice to write off the small towns as garbage compared to the illustriousness of the cities. they have their own crosses to bear and not all nooks and crannies of our region are bereft of better values, culture, or worthwhile humans.

per example: Helen is a tourist trap, garbage hole of a place. on the edge of it lies the Sautee valley, which does not contain a single traffic light, that exists b/c of its arts center and i can go there and catch, sold out, something like a Malaysian shadow puppet show featuring an entirely muslim cast.

That's wasn't my intention. I live in what some would call a "4 stop light" town. (although it's a medium sized city)

Alabama has quite a few super small towns that are all black right across the middle. "the black belt"

I was more so talking about imagery of the South and how it always focuses on small town hillbilly types.

People think the south and all they invision is rebel flags and pickup trucks like the rest of us don't exist.

I told a London taxi driver that I was from Alabama and he said "Really?! You don't sound like Forest Gump!"

I love that movie... But dang....

The difference is that all a hillbilly can do is hurt your feelings.

The ones who wear suits and work in offices cause the real damage. A "heritage" of a different kind.

focus is often on our poverty and what our poverty breeds. true words. we have the most easily recognizable iconography and got made into the poster child for American trash. i imagine television had something to do with solidifying the image. #1?

i got asked in a not joking way if i've ever fucked my brother. i think that says more about the tact and couth of the outsider.

well, and stuff like hang a KKK sign in the middle of town to help an old rich woman strong arm the city council into letting her build a luxury hotel. which happened this spring in mine.

on the ground intimidation isn't nothing. the permission from this administration has really emboldened folks and primed them to want to do more than hurt your feels.
