The defense of this girl sounds like the defense of Brock Turner. The people who defend him allege that he thought she wanted it, he was drunk so not in his right mind, he did a horrible thing but don't let it ruin his life. She did a horrible fucked up thing and shouldn't get off so easy, same as a young rapist who "just messed up".

The girl's defense was that she herself was depressed and also taking an antidepressant which has been shown to limit activity in the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and empathy. The judge obviously didn't buy it and frankly neither do I. I like the prosecution argument way better which boiled down to she's the worst and also she was gaining sympathy and attention from people who she told about having this suicidal boyfriend. Kind of like Munchausen-by-proxy. "Imagine the extra attention I'd get if he actually died!"

Most of the inner city programs to stop violence are led by ex-cons and people who have lived lives of crime in their youth. (Mostly gang members and drug dealer) They've gotten out of prison, rehabilitated and have devoted their lives to stopping other kids from going down the same path.
Rehabilitation is a real thing. These programs are all around the country. I'm sure there are a bunch in Harlem, Brooklyn and the Bronx. But a theme I noticed is that they all say it's best to have someone who has been there and got the t-shirt, to lead the kids away from it. I'm not one for black and white narratives about people. |

Interesting note regarding Keith's thought that we ask what the "victim" would like the punishment to be and then punishing them with that suggestion.
Haman, in Megilat Ester, is asked how the man who saved the king should be rewarded. Thinking he's the one about to be rewarded, he suggests a parade to let everyone know what a hero he is. In the end, Mordechai gets that reward and Haman is hanged on the very gallows he built. This is not a perfect inverse parallel but I do find it interesting that this concept has been around for centuries (or x period of time, depending on your biblical beliefs. Or no time at all, could all be made up, how am I to know?). |
