Well, a theory is a system of facts, or data points.

In fact (And I say this reluctantly since it means spook and I are apparently in agreement.) A theory will often be considered more reliable than a fact.

A fact is a single data point obtained through observation or measurement.

A theory, at least once they attain wide acceptance will consist of many many data points supporting each other through the theoretical framework.

I will now give a long winded and strange example:

Imagine balls of lard are falling from the sky. Many many lard balls. After careful observation, scientists observe that all lard balls fall within the bounds of a definable rectangle. So they formulate a theory: When balls of lard fall from the sky they tend to fall within this rectangle.

With this theory they are now able to predict where the next ball of lard will fall. And if it remains successful, the theory stand, and maybe even gets refined.

Now, two million lard balls later, someone claims to have seen a single lard ball fall outside the rectangle.

This may require a reworking of the theory, but first the seasoned scientist will look for other explanetions. It is more likely that the single data point is flawed in some way, than that the theory is wrong. It's two million against one after all.

That's hardly the end of the story, but ..well, there it is.

It really is a matter of whether you are using "fact" in a "this is an incident that happened once" way, or fact as in, an axiom or true bit of information.

Alive

Yeah, weren't we all supposed to die today?
It's coming up to the last hour of 6/6/06 here in the UK
(where hooking isn't legal by the way) and not so much as a rumble of
thunder...
I was hoping for something a bit more spectacular!
