Roommates
Keith I got to tell you that the geeky composer roommate may not be the best thing... Why? Many music composers play and write their music in their apartments. Yeah the guy may not be bringing in tons of sport stuff and old alcohol bottles as trophies from the football days... But wait till you find that the composer may listen to the same three bars over and over again. Tweaking it just a little each time.
It can be torture to those who do not enjoy writing music. On top of that, make sure that he doesn't play a instrument, which most composers do, and HAS to practice his "French horn" every night. One of my closest friends went to Julliard to compose music. Not only did he play four instruments, but he also edited music every night on his computer. To this day I can remember VIVIDLY the repeating first 10 bars of his violin piece that he just couldn't get right. This was 5 years ago and every time I hear a song that has those first three same bars in another melody progression, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. So if your friend Adam is thinking, "Maybe this geeky guy will be quiet and not as much a problem as the other guy," think again. Or at least make sure he has headphones and doesn't need to practice an instrument every night. You may not look at music the same way ever again... |

just a tip, but my wife took my last name and moved her old one to her middle name. This has been invaluable because as you transition all of your documents (passport, drivers license, social security) the old last name as the middle name eliminates alot of the governmental fuck ups that occur. Just an idea but without her moving her old last name to the middle we could not leave the country to go on honeymoon.

I like that compromise too. Like Chemda said, when you've had a name for thirty or so years, the idea of changing it is difficult. I also agree that hyphens make things difficult for everyone, especially if your kids inherit the hypen. I had a teacher who combined his name with his new wife's to make a totally new surname when they got married and that seemed kind of cool. Of course then you risk the wrath of the husband's family who might be old-school and very angry that the family name has been severed like that. But putting your last name as your middle name is a good way to keep your own family history, too. I'm just glad it was up to my brother to provide "heirs" to the family name and not me, although I always joke with my family that I can provide them too if I have kids out of wedlock. |
