Here’s the story about the spelling of my name:

My parents didn’t decide the spelling of my name. They didn’t speak or read or write any English when we got here.

My teachers taught me to spell my name Chemda.
When I was 14 I was headed to holland to meet my next door neighbors and spend time with them and their grandparents. It was the first time I was traveling by myself. It was the first time I saw my name on an official document. My passport had my name spelled with a K. Who knew.

The thing is I don’t like that spelling because people only call me Kemda which grates my nerves.

I was going to change my name to officially be spelled with a C when Hennessy and I added each other’s last name to ours. But that was a bust.

My first and last name both start with the same Hebrew letter. But it doesn’t translate well:
חמדה חלילי
