I understand your point. Why enjoy something in front of someone that can't enjoy it with you? Why rub someone's face (a person you supposedly care about) in the fact that they can't, at the moment, enjoy what you can? I get it.

I just don't agree with it. I see it as someone that I love and care about, who loves and cares for me wants to get me something for my birthday.

Most of the women I've interacted with hold emotions and feelings above truth and logic. This makes no sense to my male brain, but what-are-you-gonna-do?

Going along with whatever crazy stuff they want is part of the relationship package. Being supportive of their wishes even if it doesn't make sense to me is what they often want.

Now if it was my idea to be an asshole in the situation, then shame on me and I'm being an asshole. If it's my partner's idea for me to be an asshole in the situation, we talk about if that's really what they want and I'll do my best to present my thoughts about how what they want isn't logical and doesn't make sense to me. In the end, if that's really what they want then I'll go along.

There was a time where my wife was on a mandatory liquid only diet for a few weeks. In the beginning, I took care of my own meals and ate alone so she didn't have to suffer watching me eat while she couldn't. After a few days, this drove her crazy because she felt left out and ostracized from the family. She got more out of being part of the family even if she couldn't eat the same delicious food. That's not what I thought I would have wanted if I were in her position, but who am I to dictate how someone else should feel?

It seems like there is info that isn't public about Jill and Jack and the hamburger situation that might make it more clear that Jill was being exploited by an asshole.
