What is bad about it is that is sanctimonious. I believe that anyone who drinks too much, takes too many drugs, eats too much or whatever knows they have a problem. You pointing it out can never be good (in my opinion). Saying "I'm here if you need me", might help but even that may not be well received.

It sounded like the story was about being friends with the alcoholic, ya silly.

Alcoholics
I’m British so if I told everyone I know who drinks too much they had a problem, I wouldn’t have anybody left to talk to.
My friend got pretty “handsy” with me the other night, she was very drunk. If a man groped me when drunk I’d never see them again, now I’ve got to tell my good friend not to grope me when she gets drunk. Funtimes I don’t drink as much as I used to because I sort of grew out of it. |

An addict or alcoholic won’t change because you said something to them. A person has gotta hit their own threshold for their own bullshit before saying enough is enough. Or they don’t. Whichever route they take is on them, and Chemda’s alanon suggestion is the most important thing to take away from this.
I have alcoholics in my life, some alive others not, addicts, friends in abusive relationships.... they live their lives on their terms and I’m there for them in a capacity I’m comfortable with. It’s just what it is. |
