I've always been a person fairly set in his beliefs; but'd never really made up my mind when it came to abortion- until I met my now wife, 3 years ago in NYC. She's Japanese, and we're both 30.

Anyway- we went out for a while in nyc, then I'd moved in to her place.

One night she gave me one of those solemn looks and made like she really needed to tell me something. After about 1/2 an hour of torture (SPIT IT OUT!- I kept saying), she said that she had an abortion when she was 18. (Not a big deal for me, but we didn't know each other so well at the time.)

She later went on to get a Ph.d from a top school where she is now an almost Professor ( extremely rare for women here in Japan), where we've lived happily ever since.

After she'd confessed that to me, I asked how many people knew about it (they're a very private people, those j-folk), and she said 'just the two of us', meaning she'd kept that ordeal inside for almost 10 years away from family and the only other boyfriend she'd ever had.

I know this story has drug on- but I know for a fact that if she'd had the baby, she'd have had to marry the jerk (custom) and she'd have never went to University, nor NYC, nor have ever met me. Her ex would have had to drop out too (he's now some prof somewhere) to support 'em, since that's what %95 percent of the guys do in Japan when they get a girl in trouble.

I knew that night she was the one for me, 'cause of the courage she'd had to do it on her own, then tell *me* about it.


Trivia- The Pill only became legal in '97 here 'cause they were trying to get Viagara on the market.

EDIT: OK, I went back and read it. Good story. I know a few Japanese and everything you said about your wife sounds just like the ones I know. They keep shit in for a long time to save face.
