I'm guessing that having a jar of rum fruit sitting around some Caribbean people for a month, without them drinking it, is a big deal.

Don't worry about the spinach, just buy from local farms if you're worried. (Well, in Wisconsin we can easily find produce that was grown locally, I don't know how difficult it is in more urban areas) But it's a company out of California that has the tainted spinach. And it wasn't 109 deaths, there've only been two deaths. I say "only" because imagine how many people have died in car wrecks in this country during the same time period and no one is suggesting that you stop driving. This is yet another BIG SCARE thing with the media the same way that we had the "summer of sharks" after four people got attacked and the "Africanized killer bees" that we've been waiting to come up from Texas for the past fifteen years. They get you freaked out about threats that are actually rare while many more people are dying from the more mundane things like heart attacks.
