3521: Vessel for Love - Part 2 w/ Tom Delgado
I don’t believe Will’s apology. I guarantee he didn’t even write it. He is only trying to avoid consequences at this point. He had time to calm down before his speech to be able to actually apologize and he didn’t. Did he even try to reach out to Chris to apologize directly before issuing this? I think we saw the mask that Will has been wearing for a while fall. I used to like him as an actor but the way he has handled this plus the fact that he even justified the slap-no longer. I mean Jaden Smith even said “that’s how we handle things around here”. He didn’t even apologize to Questlove whose win has been completely overshadowed!!! I had to look up the name of the documentary that won-Summer of Soul. Will’s actions took that away from them.
I don’t think giving them Oscar back will do anything but he definitely shouldn’t be allowed to go to ANY awards shows anymore. I really don’t think he is sorry. And I was shocked by some of the people on his side that I know personally who aren’t violent people who were justifying his actions. Like, we always tell our kids that we don’t hit when we are mad. I literally tell my toddler that all the time. Also-finding out that he was asked to leave and didn’t-that’s extra. Security should have tried harder. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Also I don’t think he should be allowed to talk about it on The Red Table because isn’t it illegal to profit over a crime you committed? I imagine they get some kind of revenue from that show.

The reason I feel the apology comes across as so hollow is because it comes 24 hours later from Will Smith’s PR team rather than the man himself. He had the chance to apologize during his Oscar win speech and while he (kinda) said sorry to the Academy, he didn’t direct it to Chris at all.
Also I’m glad Chemda finally discovered Mrs Maisel. I recommended it a while back when she was asking for TV shows to watch and knew she’d love it |

The longer this conversation goes on the more clear it becomes *who* is interesting in the actual humanity of the people involved and *who* is interested in simply performing morality and declaring themselves amongst the "civilized".
Do people actually care about Chris Rock or do they care about the "sanctity" of whatever code they think was broken that night? War footage from Ukraine has been described on the show. Fight videos have been discussed. People come on the show all the time with wild stories. Every few months there is a viral police brutality video. But a slap is shocking and upsetting to this degree? It's not the slap. It's not even the violence. It's the perceived breakdown of some greater thing you want to protect. Reflect on what that is. Cause one man getting slapped isn't the downfall of society. It's giving white moderate. It's giving implicit biases coming out to play. It's giving black brute characterizations and microagressions. It's giving racism. Plain and simple. |

It's very interesting reading the responses because there are clear judgments and no "gray area." Yes, Will fucked up with slapping Chris, but Chris Rock isn't innocent in it either. There are too many nuances here that I wish were covered on the show to be a bit more "fair." These rich people are going to be ok. People react all the time, this just happened to be on stage.
Also littlp "Also I don’t think he should be allowed to talk about it on The Red Table because isn’t it illegal to profit over a crime you committed? I imagine they get some kind of revenue from that show." Chris Rock's tickets sales skyrocketed. I'm pretty sure there are other horrible Oscar winners benefiting besides what shit they did in the past (Weinstein). What Will did, doesn't compare to that. Still kinda baffled after Chris's documentary on Hair, he still thinks it's ok to say a Joke about G. I. Jane? Seriously? A movie from over 20 years ago? How out of touch are you with the very audience you're in front of. Also, I'll be the offended Black woman here for you, most of us don't need people talking about our hair. With the history they have, he could have joked about someone else. |

I think it's important to add that the talking about our hair at a work event in front of an auditorium of our (mostly white) peers with the expectation that they'll laugh at us.
But folks don't care what offends black women or the nuances of that. They care about what they think is offensive. And that is the barometer for everyone else and there's no discussing it. The majority has spoken... |
