At my doctor I waited at least 45 minutes just to go and wait another 15 in the exam room last week. My daughter sees about 7 different specialists and I do not think we ever got into an exam room in under 20 minutes - even if we are early or on time.
Having the living dead working the reception area is not an unrealistic ideal though -- in all the offices I have been in, I think there are only 3 that have a cheerful person working the front desk. I just pour on the cheer when I come in contact with a grumpy nurse or receptionist. It makes me feel good in a kind of snide way that I am super duper nice to the grumpy grumps.
When my daughter was only a few months old, I took her to see a new specialist for the first time. This guy was part of a practice of three other doctors and had the basement of a small office building in RYE, NY as their space. The waiting room was PACKED - after a while people had to stand and wait cause there was no more seats left.
Every person that would come in would have their jaw drop in disbelief over the amount of people waiting. A person would get called in and others would grumble that they were there first and go and check with the front desk person on the wait they have and mention that they arrived before the person that just went in.
I guess one too many people asked this nurse about the wait that she came out of the office and actually shouted at us that we were not to come and ask her how long the wait was. We had no idea what was going on behind the scenes and that we just all had to be patient. The room was stunned and silent. She looked at us with a stern and smug face and shut the door loudly behind her.
Everyone in the waiting room was looking around at each other like what the heck was THAT??? I broke the silence by saying 'I dare someone to go up and ask her how long their wait is" and some people chuckled but mostly we were all apalled at how she acted. We do not go to that doctor anymore.
Maybe since I have to take my daughter to the doctor so much that I am used to the waiting and I have developed a good coping method with the waiting that consists mostly of a positive attitude no matter what attitude I meet at the front desk.

The point isnt how long she had to wait. If the doc said "it will be 30 mins" she would have left and come back. she is mad that the receptionist always says "just 5 more mins" and it ends up being half an hour
