Vancouver was big into alternative schooling, and I read a lot of books about it while I was there. It's one of those cases where there are literally a hundred solutions to public school, but they're all hard and they all take a lot of effort to set up. I think it's worth it. Public school really isn't teaching anyone much of anything, it's just a place to get kids off the street so their parents can go to work. Whatever benefit you imagine your child is receiving is not true.
Unless your kid is a totally stubborn ox, they're gonna come out of school with a pile of weird neuroses. Most adults have succumbed by a slow matter of degrees until whatever spark they had in life is extinguished, and school is where that starts. At worst your kid is gonna come out of school as a drug addict or date rape victim, which may sound alarmist, but I know one of each in my immediate life. If you care about your kids, get them out of there. It's a jail with no guards. You and they have only got one life to live, so put in the effort to try to make the best of it. Don't just flush them through the pre-determined system. We're all clever enough to circumvent this. |

This was the saddest show ever.
When your Mom wrote "this family is all I have. It's my life's work" that line was like an icepick in my heart. Hope it works out all right. Oh yeah, the AssBurgers mom: why'd you have a kid if you knew your Dad and brother have the disease? Fucking selfish. |
