Regarding art, and how it can be bad, my philosophy of art, like many things, comes from Ayn Rand's "The Romantic Manifesto", in which she says,
"Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value-judgments." In short, the artist recreates reality according to his/her own view of what the world is, could be or should be. By that standard, I think, art could be considered "bad" when it fails to communicate the artist's metaphysical perspective (i.e. view of reality) or when the artist does not make any attempt to communicate (i.e. produces meaningless art, which sounds like most of what was being talked about in this episode). While I understand the subjectivity of taste (I like Frank Frazetta and M.C. Escher, someone else likes LeRoy Neiman and Andy Warhol), I think that using this standard, there is definitely an objective rule to be applied in terms of "good" and "bad". I don't like Picasso because I don't agree with his value system, but I can recognize that he is a "good" artist, in terms of his attempt to communicate and the level of his technique. I don't like Barnett Newman's "The Voice of Fire" because it fails to communicate any idea, and required no technique above that of a housepainter, and was a huge waste of taxpayer money to boot. Therefore, it is "bad" art. Of course, ultimately it all comes under Sturgeon's Law: ""Ninety percent of everything is crap."

.....Personally, I think the Piss Christ is awesome. As I understand it, the piece represents what modern Christianity has done to what it proclaims is its core message. People get in their cars and drive for miles, passed the homeless, the poor, those in desperate need, just to sit in a mega-church, donating money for the church's private jet and HDTV studio while some guy tells them that they're better than everyone else because they're in the congregation.
.....So they've taken Jebus's message, "How about we all be nice to each other for a change and help those who need help" and pissed all over it. .....Also, the discussion of dick-head artists made me think of that snotty bitch who claimed to have repeatedly impregnated herself, only to purposely cause miscarriages. Then she said that she didn't even do that, she just wanted (attention) publicity for the cause. I don't even know what fucking cause it was. Either abortion or to bring back 'Firefly'. Either way, now you don't even have to do what you claim is your art. .....Know what? For my art, I have impregnated all of the girls in the KATG audience. Or did I? Phlegmomomon!

That's where I first heard the story as well; big NPR nerd here. I'll find the link where it was found to be a hoax; the guy actually came forward with that information. |
