While I agree that most of those people are simpler I don't believe they are dumber. I'm sure they don't stimulate there minds or expose themselves to some of the things we do, but they would be perfectly able to adapt.

I didn't buy the thing about other countries preferring US dollars (no pun intended). I was under the impression that it is illegal to buy things in foreign currency. The only place I have ever given US dollars (other than the US of course, dur) is in Cancun. And not even the rest of Mexico, just Cancun. I'd like to see someone try and pay for something in US dollars in Europe. I think they might get a little pissy about it.

well, this must be a brand new event.

i know just a few years ago, US currency was good most places in the world, sure, local stuff is customary, but US greenbacks were taken most places in most countries. maybe its all changed since the back end of the bush administration and the euro getting more popular, but i know from people traveling abroad as few as three years ago that they got by just fine with it.

when i go to europe, i am only going to have american dollars, lets see if i starve. itll be a fun test. anyone wanna let me couch surf, just in case?

In Europe you might be fine paying with USD in larger stores/restaurants but you will get an extra shitty exchange rate so its definitely nor worth it.

Frankfurt is not the most exiting city from a tourism standpoint but I have a couch...

True. In Strasbourg there aren't many restaurants that accept Dollars. Stores don't for sure. You're much better off taking your Euros directly from an ATM.

Frankfurt is quite nice, I went there for Joanna Newsom's concert at the Dreikoenigs-Kirche and loved the city.

IT has never ever been customary to buy things in US dollars in Australia or New Zealand, the only countries I have long term experience of.

If you make it to NZ while I'm there, you are welcome to sleep in the spare room

In the UK you need pounds, most shops don't take Euros either. However there are places to exchange money everywhere. I sometimes have had problems with Scottish bank notes in London. Not so much now though... I don't think the dollar is king in Europe as much as it is in the rest of the world. If you make it to Scotland Spooky I'll cook you a haggis and some mince and tatties.
