Almost all the important stuff civilization has accomplished has come about because people got together in groups and bounced ideas off each other for a while. The bigger the groups, the longer the associations, the greater the achievements. The downside is people are still at least a little like animals, so when you pack them in close together they become more dangerous to each other for lots of reasons.

People also fuck...a lot...no matter where they are. In cities with diverse, changing populations, they fuck whoever's nearby, which means diversity in the end, thought to be good. In the sticks, they fuck whoever/whatever they can reach on a tank of gas (at least, these days...), so there's a good chance they're only a couple of generations apart. If the population is denser and cultures diverse, disease can also spread more rapidly. In rural areas, it's the opposite.

Everywhere I've been, city folk think rural folk are nuts and genetically questionable, and vice versa. Both groups also suspect they don't need the other. Since there's both street hooker and farmer's daughter pr0n in abundance, however, I conclude both approaches to life are essential for survival of the species on some deep-down level .

Eh, look. Spooky tried to make people uncomfortable (as in, making them afraid for their lives...), and somebody made him uncomfortable back. Funny how some folks can dish it out, but can't take it.

As for the toad, well...amphibians *are* in danger, worldwide, but it's an anonymous, pretty dim critter. Compared to the pile of chickens, cows, and pigs we all sucked down on the 4th...whatever.

At least Keith looked it in the eye for a second.

EDIT: Waste don't enter into it. People kill animals without even realizing it. Saying his was a gratuitous act is just rationalizing a queasy stomach.

I didn't suggest anyone was dumb, but there was a good basis for either group to believe the other was. City folk are recognized for their stupidity widely and often but I guess...from the standpoint of, say, daily Internet users this is unexceptional? Or...better yet...maybe some "city people" are dumber than others? That's a gimme, right?

Wait...then maybe folks in any given place aren't all the same...(naww...).

As for your background...which is swell, great, kthx...that makes you urban by definition. You've traveled and lived in different cultures, so you're done...you're not rural, even if you were raised originally by wolves or whatever. That piece of your background, that mindset, is buried, and you'll always view things from the perspective of a city dweller in the future.

i can still see from the perspective of country folk...its just that the perspective is so narrow not much light gets in... and as for those dumb city folk -- percentage wise much more are smarter than the few country folk that arent dumb sorry just the way it is

i love the country i love that way of life but the people are dumb plain and simple i feel like accuracy is being taken as an insult

Says who?

Myself, born and lived my early years in southern VA, near the NC border, so although not (for example) central Mississippi towns were spread out, very small, and almost nobody living there commuted to anywhere other than the "store", a field, mill, mine, pressing house, etc. Surviving living hand to mouth on a farm, orchard, or whatever there is tricky...it takes smarts, and granted there's a good case for leaving, which many people have.

"Percentage"-wise in that sort of place, one either survives by making the right decisions, year after year, or they're forced out. How many people can live in/around a large city -- a *real* city like NYC -- and do nothing of value, or just make continuous, dumb mistakes over and over again? I'd wager it's a big number, actually. For folks on their way up, healthy, clever, whatever you want to call them it must be a place of infinite possibilities, but plenty of city dwellers don't' fit that description.

Does bad weather, betting on crops, and miles between neighbors make folks conservative and narrow minded? Yeah, sure. Do they fuck a little too close to home? Obviously. That said, have *most* folks born in the rural US over the last 40yrs chosen to leave when they grow up because this is so limiting in ways? Well...yeah. So...where are all these stupid people now, and how stupid were they to begin with? Dunno, but I think the "dumbness" isn't so easy to pin down.

EDIT: Yeah, I can hear it now...all the smart ones left, or the dumb country folk are the ones sucking up welfare in the cities, once they got there. Or...not.

I don't take your suggestion as insult, if that's a concern.

Wow .. I hope so too!

I would have been less sad if Keith squished one of the country bumpkins than that poor toad. Im serious. If the story was that he took his foot and steped on some hillbilly, I would probably have laughed rather than feel the utter shock that I felt at the thought of toad splatter. Sure, theres alot of toads in the world, and the fact that one was killed will not have a detrimental empact on the earth... but the same can be said for most people.

Re Demitri: "[Sears] was evaluated by a military psychiatrist who suggested there was 'something seriously wrong' with Sears."

But, that doesn't make any sense. Afterall, Demitri, himself said: "There's nothing wrong with me. As a matter of fact, I'm one of the few men in the city that has nothing wrong with him."
