Pretty much up to the individuals. They have access to AFR and Stars & Stripes, occasional web access depending on their postings. A few brown bars will get preachy about the candidates too, but that's pretty limited.

Regarding the ban on hoodies/hats on thursday nights:

The reason it would be just Thursday nights is because thats usually late-night shopping night. Most shops in Australia close around 5pm, hence the only time they would be open after 6pm is the one day a week they are open late (Thursdays).

I used to work in a Supermarket and had guys wearing caps, knocking off grog, using the caps to hide their face from the cameras.
Instead of banning caps, we used them as a sign for people to watch out for. Whenever shady people with caps came in, they were watched by at least one of us until they left.
