The problem with proving coldplay copied the hook from Joe Satriani is it has to be show they consciously heard the track and decided to use it in their own track. It is possible they didn’t intend to do it and they only reason they were called on it was from the millions of people listening to millions of tracks some people noticed two that sounded the same. It all comes down to if it was done consciously their douches and should louse all rights to the track, if it was done unconsciously they should decide how much it contributes to the overall piece and if it’s decided it’s significant they should workout a deal.

Also aren’t you guys being a little hard on matt. Keith and chemda had both decide be fore the episode had started that coldplay were in the wrong. Matt was trying to show that it’s possible it was accident. In a 2 on 1 debate were they wouldn’t budge an inch he felt backed into a corner and got a little shouty and a little condescending. Then he started firing out a hard to follow scatter shot of the reuse of music in blues and rap, why copyright law is broken and the principles of creative commons. I know I’ve done the same thing while debating a point in the past.

Keith thanks for the correction...Its been awhile since I listened back to that show

What BroLo did is sampling and now listening back it obvious to me that the beat is the same

But even just 3 beats is copyright violation according to the law. You wanna looks at a real asinine copyright case(Bridgeport Music v. Dimension Films[NWA sampled a two-second guitar chord from Funkadelic's tune,"Get off your ass and jam", lowered the pitch and looped it five times in their song, "100miles and running". This was all done without Funkadelic's permission and with no compensation paid to Bridgeport Music, which owns the rights to Funkadelic's music. Bridgeport brought the issue before a federal judge, who ruled that the incident was not in violation of copyright law.]).

The film I linked to specifically discusses this landmark case in detail minutes 3min--8min30seconds(You are a busy guy Keith but 5.5minutes isn't too much time to gain a better understanding of the copyrights and sampling) where they have Dr Lawrence Ferrara, Director of NYU music department, who is actively involved in intellectual property and music copyright.

You have to listen closely to the sample which was considered a copyright violation much like BroLo did with just the 3 beats. To the untrained ear you won't notice the sample but if you listen for it you know is there

Here is the link to the whole film, just watch 3minutes - 8min 30seconds to get the point

It isn't just "3 notes" dude. It's the pattern those notes follow, the tempo, the basic layout. Seems a lot more than coincidence. It very well could be, but what are those odds?

Coldplay deserves the accusations regardless. When they first played the song..when was that, the Grammys? I don't know. It seemed very pretentious. I don't like pretentious people, and therefore I hate Coldplay.

I didn't listen to the show until yesterday, and I agree with most of you that Matt was a complete tool in this show, and I normally don't have a problem with him. He could not be more wrong about the Coldplay/Satriani thing, because covering part of someone else's song with your own words still makes it their song. Whomever pointed out the Queen/Vanilla Ice reference is right. Whether or not Coldplay intended to use Satriani's riff is irrelevant if Satriani is the original creator of that particular riff, and owns the rights to it. If it's freeware, then this is a dead argument. What makes Matt such a douche is that he is arguing as if he is the utmost authority on this, when really he's just some dude with an opinion. Really, Matt, what the hell made you so special?

I started off being quite impressed w/ Matt's arguments, and kinda got the impression that Chemda was looking for things to argue about with him, but slowly began to realise that he was talking out of his ass. He had some valid points but mostly cancelled them out with his stupid points and/or shouting. Still, good entertainment.

By the way I'm for the Arab extremists (as in I think they are worse ). The Nazis are way less extreme. You could, theoretically, be engulfed into a fascist state, as I'm sure some of the Nazis were - we all know what happened to those who tried to fight back. It's much harder to find yourself engulfed in a extremist Arab core. If you're in one of them, you're pretty awful.

Edit: just seen the poll results, pretty close - unless CheatsPaste has been up to his tricks again?

I think he adopts the dissenting point of view just to piss off the audience which he seems to hold a mild disdain for based on the fact that for the most part the people who argue with him are fake internet folk who act tough and feel entitled to something for no apparent reason. He knows it plays good and bad with the audience and creates a buzz and he seems more than happy to oblige and indulge all of those in here who love to argue about loving or hating him. I listened to this show and while I heard every word, I wasnt really listening because of how I view his intent, this makes me enjoy his appearances more than I use to and revel in the fact that I know how much it pisses off the rank and file listener when he adopt the conflicting point of view.

I can usually detach myself too, but I used to be a history teacher and every now and then he pushes some of those old pet-peeve buttons.
