You are not criticizing how wrong or right I am on something, or my stance on something, just how it comes across.

But this guy is talking about shortchanging waiters because he doesn't have the money, and I'm the asshole? Okay then. Good to know. Evidently I'm a douche for saying there is no excuse for not tipping 20%, because I have the money to do it, and I make shit. I freely embrace my cleansing properties, then.
when you get older, and Im not that old, but have developed the ability to put things in perspective a lot quicker than I would 10 or 15 years ago. Maybe the older set is jaded this way because we didnt have the internet to yell at when we were going through the "my opinions matter and im going to talk loud until some one listens" days, we just dont give a fuck after one or two of these things, especially when I would have to explain myself to take this any further. you win. your the king of opinions, the king of work and the king of money...

It's something I try to avoid, but it's not something I'll apologize for.

I do tip fairly well, I think. Generally around 20%, but feel free to assume otherwise, because again, it's not a big deal to me. I tip due to appreciation, not obligation, and if I can't, I can't. I'm not your employer. Stop being a waiter if it sucks so much, and if it doesn't, stop whining. I've had crappy jobs, but I've never been a waiter, I understand that you put up with a lot of shit and you get shit wages, but no amount of indignation is going to make me feel guilty about not paying someone else's employee.

The guilty party here is any system that allows any employer to pay less than minimum wage, so don't look at me like I owe anyone anything, I pay for what I buy. Anything more is optional.

As far as why black people tip less, I don't know. My guess is that it's because black culture has adopted "the struggle" as it's own. Black people don't feel they owe anybody anything, if anything, the establishment should be tipping me for eating here, I have it hard too. I mean, why should I tip my waiter when I can't even get a cab in my own city after 6pm? It's like asking a drowning man to save a man on a sinking boat. Or the other way around, whatever. And even those that manage to rise above the struggle think along the lines of 'No one helped me out, so why should I help anyone?' And it's sad, but the Me vs. the World mentality is very much a large part of the culture, and probably plays a huge role, along with just general ignorance (I didn't know how badly waiters were paid either until about a month ago) in explaining why we tip so badly.

I'm pretty sure black people are poorer on average than white people, though, so I don't think the statistic on black/white tipping was very fair at all. I'm willing to bet dentists tip more than single mothers also. So part of it is probably just the fact that certain patterns are more overt, since we tend to categorize people by race instinctively anyway. It's easier to tell black person from a white person than it is to tell whether or not someone has two kids at home to feed. And everyone knows, any black person over the age of 16 is somebody's babymomma/daddy anyway.

My own opinion on tipping has nothing to do with either race or culture, though perhaps nationality does play a part (I was raised in Jamaica, where tipping is rare among locals and tourist alike, but where in general, waiters are paid relatively well). My opinion is just an opinion.

I regret that my first post on the forums takes such an invidious stance, but eh.

you suck at life. this issue has been beaten to the ground so i'll just leave it at that. but you're wrong and you should know it.

Wow dude.

I agree with Keith, and you say I'm wrong. I say why, and you say nothing about me being wrong, it's my tone.

Then when I point this out, you don't actually say anything on the matter, you just ramble about how you have something to say, but you won't.

You're totally right. My handful of original sentences? A burning desire to tell the internet what I think. But you just announcing your opinion and then refusing to back it but still talking about it is completely the opposite.

your doing it again.

I said your the king of opinions, you win.

but yet you still want to argue.

when this started I was the jackass for calling you out on that dumbass statement you made about being the king of work and money or something.

i got bored and said you win. (i was mocking you when I did this, im still the asshole at this point)

you wont let it go, the world has to hear what you have to say and how right you are about what ever it is that is coming out of your mouth and what ever thought that pops into your head is spot on and you try to call me out again and wont let it drop even though I have long since conceded the point to you even if I was only doing it because I didnt feel like typing back and was actually done after my first comment.

but you just cant let it go and let the other guy leave the exchange as the jackass, you have to keep opening your mouth and turn yourself into the asshole whether you know it or not. (this was my original point, veiled as it might have been, I didnt fee like explaining it).

so now, your the king of jackasses too.

You trolled me into an exchange with you, and then I'm a douche when I won't drop it? And I guess I should ignore the fact that you said you were done, and then you returned with the largest post in this exchange yet.

As far as your ridiculous accusations go: I will do what you certainly cannot, and what you say I cannot, by leaving this conversation. What's more, if you do not respond to this post, that is evidence that I shamed you into actually doing what you claimed you were going to do. Good day.

To be fair to McNally - he was in NYC for almost a year, and seemed to be pretty immersed into it all. You just have to realize, that not only is Canada physically different, but so is our mindset. In the states, if 25% of the population demanded equal representation of their 1st language ( other than english ) - they'd send the army in. In Canada, not only did we give the french their rights, but we probably went overboard ( talk to any English Quebecer ). In the US, a big deal was made about having an African-American for President - here in Canada if we had black people they may have made it in ( being the cool kids ), but at least we had a female Prime Minister for maybe 20 minutes. We tend to be more laid back here, more reflective and easy going about life - at least compared to New York. Hell, since McNally left - the sales of bear spray have gone significantly down to the point of where they're considering a government bail-out.

A year in NYC, is enough to understand it - especially compared to a lifetime in the Great White North.
