For example! In the song Hot Dog by Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst says:

"you wanna fuck me like an animal
you LIKE to burn me on the inside
you like to think i’m a perfect drug
just know that nothing you do will bring you closer to me"

While the lyrics aren't even a direct quote fron Nine Inch Nail's song Closer, it was similar enough and just enough so that Limp Bizkit HAD to give writer's credits to Trent Reznor and pay him royalties. The song was done to pay homage to NIN, of course this is what started the fued between the two bands.

Quite obviously the SONGS ARE COMPLETELY different entities meaning COMPLETELY different things, but when you borrow someone's words/melodies/samples. YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM CREDIT.

This is why we have quotation marks. If the melody is the same, Coldplay is obligated to compensate Joe Satriani. Plain and simple.

There are actually people who are paid by record companies to listen to your song to make sure you haven't stolen any samples.
Thank you PotatoE for putting it so well.

For someone who claims to know stuff about IP, Matt sounded kinda dumb when he kept repeating that it's not the same song. Of course it's not, but that's not what matters - the test that courts use to determine whether there was copyright infringement is whether there was substantial copying, NOT whether it's a different piece of work. And a melody is pretty fucking substantial. You can have a completely different work that nevertheless copies substantially from someone else. It is infringement of copyright law.

I think its absurd to say that an entire nation was coerced. That's historical revisionism.

The country was convinced. There may have been factors such as economical situations, treatment by the victors of WWI, etc., but the fact remains: the majority of Germany was convinced to join the Nazi cause, not forced.

My favorite is how in Canada, Doritos say "Chips Tortilla Chips". So that both the english "Tortilla Chips", and the french "Chips Tortilla" are represented. And nobody is confused. Of course, it does make the chip bag look like it was designed by a small child.

Coldplay "The SOngs They Didn't Write"

I have enjoyed the discussion of Coldplay vs. Satriani. Has anyone on here mentioned this issue with the same song, "Viva La Vida" ripping off this song by a band called Creaky Boards:

YouTube - creaky boards + coldplay + itunes fiasco
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm?!

Nazi's were forced to be that way? They had no choice?

My grandmother was born in Germany and moved to Holland to marry my grandfather. When the war started, the Nazi's tried to get everyone to "sign on the line" and become loyal nazi's themselves. My grandmother did NOT, she made that choice .. though whether it was a matter of descency or an act of being stubborn, who knows at this point??? Life became tough as a result, but she had a choice and made the right one.

It was simply the "norm". Propaganda is not a new tactic invented by the Bush administration, they weren't smart enough to come up with it on there own.

Oh, btw, your pope was a member of the Nazi Youth. Signing up was considered a "patriotic" duty.

*LOL* I wasn't alive either - just descended from stubborn people.

As for the Nazi's - people blindly following authority figures - is sadly nothing new, we do it all the time.
