Canadian race relations are not great at all. If you do some research you'll find out just how much they've fucked native people here. Even now many live in reservations that are worse than any city ghetto. And there are plenty of ghetto black people in Toronto. In fact, I've seen some documentary that mentioned that Canada invented ghettos - as far as the style of neighbourhoods and buildings, etc. that you typically find in ghettos.

*LOL* why would we call them AFRICAN rather than AFRICAN-AMERICAN? We tend to refer to them as "black" ( if for some reason we have to refer to them by race ) or by region/country they're from ( such as "trinidadian"). I know my youngest brother is black ( he's adopted ) and he tends to wince at the term "AFRICAN-AMERICAN" because:
1) he's not African 2) he's not American and African-Canadian just sounds awkward at best. |

Racism lite? Do you have a government organization put in place just to make sure that you speak another language in the workplace - or that on signs that english is HALF the size of anything written in french?

Y'know, I've never quite got this whole thing about how Canada is infinately nicer. It always felt more of a passive-aggressive form of nationalism then an actual declarative statement.
From McNally's rant about New York, when he gets to how "People never litter in Canada!" and "Canadians know about commonwealth property!" it got particuarly annoying. I'm not saying this as a blast to McNally--from the sounds of it, it's more just you letting steam out after a nasty breakup and homesickness and chosing NYC as your punching bag--but I'm certain that if I had the same amount of problems as he did and lived in a major city another country away, I would find plenty of things to bitch about. Anyway, to get away from me pratically ranting about someone elses rant, one thing on the show I'm surprised wasn't discussed here was the NYU protest. When I heard about this and reactions from the protesters, I remembered an article from a blog I semi-regularly read called Colihouse about the "Protest Culture." Some young people protest because they have beliefs and genuinely want to change things. Some get an adreduline rush fucking with the man and have a good chance at getting laid. Some even think that it's their job as young people in college to do some sort of protesting. Praying for Rain: Protest Culture's Gnarled Husk -- Colihouse.net |
