I've never been to New York but there used to be an alley in Vancouver, just behind the McDonalds at granville & smithe that was just FULL of human shit. You could see it if you looked. I guess all the homeless bums got together and decided that alley was their toilet.
I had to walk by it everyday on my way to work, it was fucking disgusting and it made me so angry that a homeless person's heroin shit was one of the first things I had to smell in my day, along with the overpowering scent of piss. They have since cleaned it up, thank god!! So Canada has it's dirty secrets too, but when you get stuck in the snow with your car 3 - 4 people appear out of nowhere to help you push your car to freedom ... some of whom then FALL ON THEIR FACES then apologize to you for falling on their faces!! Ahh... Mcnally, I am sorry (Sore-rey not Sarr-ey!) that New York sucks. I love Canada. |

New York is fun to visit, I always had a good time when I came down for Keith's shows. But on a long term, I think it should cost less to live in New York. Instead you're paying more to have garbage everywhere. There are a lot more plays than in other cities, though.

I had to take a break 30 minutes in. Matt's self-absorbed yelling was making me want to riot.
First off ... I think that Matt thinks the Nazi's are better because he simply understands them better. I don't mean he loves them. I mean that he believes he could have a semi-civilized conversation with them and actually agree on a few artistic points. He doesn't have the same feeling about Arab extremists, therefore he deems them worse. Traditionally, we tend to think of crimes that involve the most premeditation as being the most ruthless and cold-blooded. Quote:

Find me a serious rock guitar player who has never heard of Joe Satriani. I feel like if Coldplay is going to claim ignorance the first thing that should happen is that someone should check to see if they really play their own goddamn instruments. Of course Matt thinks an homage' is fine. It is, as long as it's an homage'. When you do an homage' appropriately, you call attention to the predecessor's work and are essentially saying that "This guy was great and influenced me." In so doing you pay respect and draw attention to the earlier work. If Coldplay had done an upfront homage' then Satriani could possibly expect that some newer listener would discover his music and he could derive new listeners that way. Suggesting that stealing a melody is fine because "everybody does it" is, frankly, morally bankrupt. Good job, Matt.

I have to agree with Matt on the point that Copyrights hinder creativity. I see the piont of having them yes as without them some people would not be willing to create more but it has just become a huge big business area where all these artists will can sue is for just borrowing one part of anothers and re conceptualizing all the other parts
Watch the documentry "Good Copy, Bad Copy" it talks about the whole remix culture http://www.goodcopybadcopy.net/ (you can watch the film there, it brings interesting light to the whole remix, sampling, and copyright violation debate) Trailer If you want to get pissed at someone profiting from only sampling music of other artists to make his own, look up Girl Talk(link) this guy blatantly samples other music to make his own. The only reason Girl Talk isn't sued for his sampling is he doesn't profit from his CD sales he just makes money from touring. Which is where most artist make their money. Does anyone remember the backstage show where Brotherlove talked about taking a guitar rift from an AC/DC track to put in his? (Is was on a backstage episode). Thats copyright violation. So why do we support BroLo if he is guilty of sampling himself? Last edited by crazyrob; 02-22-2009 at 11:25 AM. |

Matt mentioned Shepard Fairey as an example of someone who "pay homage" to previous artists in his work. Take a look at some of the examples on this page and decide whether it's paying homage or outright theft.
Link In some instances a good case can be made for fair use, but in others Fairey just sticks his trademark on a previous artwork and sells it as his own. It's also of note that Fairey has threatened to sue others who did the same thing with his work. I'm reminded of Keith's rants on Podshow appropriating KATG as part of their "network" of podcasts. I'm not sure if Podshow just redistributed them or inserted their own ads and, like Fairey, used others work for financial gain. |
