I haven't listened to any of Michael Jackson's music in years. However, his death made me remember my high school years, which encompassed the release of Thriller and the explosion of MTV. Michael Jackson was everywhere. His creativity, vitality, and presence was so in the moment. Unfortunately, his success attracted the usual hangers-on who would deny him nothing for a paycheck. I think that these people included the mothers and fathers of young boys putting them in harm's way with the hopes of winning the lottery. Despite those things, I still remember tuning into MTV to watch the Thriller video that first time. Doing so made me happy.

Keith is dead right that nothing exists worse than mosquitoes. When I arrived in the Amazon I was talking to my host about all manner of critter-borne threats, snakes, scorpions, piranhas, alligators, monkeys, jaguars, rabid bats, spiders the size of dogs, swarms of ants that have bites that feel like fire, fish that swim up your dickhole, crazy head-hunting Indians and gun-totin' river pirates ... the list is as long as the river itself.

But this guy, who'd lived in the Amazon for 50 years, told me don't worry too much about those guys, the only one to worry about, in fact the worst animal in the entirety of the most massive jungle on Earth, is the mosquito.

I heard it wasn't cardiac arrest - they found him in the children's ward, having a stroke
