Comcast Notice of Claim of Copyright Infringement

A buddy just received this email from Comcast, should he be worried? It sounds like an empty threat and he's thinking about just laying low for a bit since he's moving in a month anyway, but what the fuck? He and I have downloaded rampantly with impunity for the last ten years up in Oregon, but he moved to Sacramento, CA a couple months ago and he's only downloaded a few movies and he's already been nabbed. Any thoughts?

This thread is about Roadrunner, not Comcast, that's why it didn't come up, but it's the same thing, I think.

That Roadrunner message seems much more threatening and requires action on the recipient's part, unlike the Comcast message. Can anyone speak to the specific policies of Comcast and how they relate to this type of threat?

Thanks, though.

the big movie/music companies have stopped suing people for downloading because the legal fees are more than they'll ever get from the average downloader, and are now putting it on the ISPs to take action on the users. Have him check the area he's moving to who the provider is, then I would suggest 1 of two things. A) if it's Comcast again, stop downloading as that will follow him to his new residence. B) if it's not Comcast, download all you can, you might be cut off a couple weeks before you move, but then oh well. The ISPs aren't working together enough right now that they'll share his info, as this is only a new policy. Either way, when your friend moves, use a proxy.

They aren't going to be cutting any services. I have gotten two of those letters and nothing ever came of it. Its just a formality, they have to send you that
