Camping!

What camping gear do you like and any tips and tricks you'd like to share?

Squirrels will eat through a tupperwear lid. Learned that yesterday. A plug-in inflator is so much better than the battery kind for air mattresses.

550 cord and duct tape can fix just about anything.

Where do you plug it in? Is this in the desolate woods like A Quiet Place where everyone had electricity?

I have to take my family to campgrounds that have water and electricity.

Water always wins. So:

Don't wear anything cotton. Cotton takes forever to dry and you can end up getting hypothermia if the temperature drops. Quick drying synthetics or wool are much much better.

It seems counter-intuitive, but "waterproof" gear is often bad. Once water gets inside your "waterproof" shoes or pack or jacket, and it will, it will be trapped inside and take forever to dry out. Breathable materials are better. Just line your pack with a big old garbage bag if you're going to hike in rain.

Hang your food over a tree branch so the bears and wangdoodles don't get it.

You wont be saying that when all of nature decides to try and eat you and it rains so much you need a boat to float out of the campsite.

Agreed.

We call mice and squirrels “mini bears” cuz the likelihood of you encountering an actual bear are slim to none but the chances of a mini bear eating your food in the middle of night - it’s gonna happen.

We camped in a tropical rain forest up in the Pacific Northwest and woke to find half a dozen banana slugs, (imagine a giant snail, the size of a mouse, without its shell) sliming around the picnic table. So mini bears can take many forms.

Beware the Mini Bear!!!
