the universal translator thing happens all. the. time. i've had to turn a blind eye.
i think maybe global homogeny is a byproduct of what it takes to get to space and especially the kind of cultural adhesion it would take to be a player on the galactic stage. there was an episode of TNG(?) where a planet was looking to join the Federation and was denied b/c of its internal divisions. people who don't homogenize just don't have power or presence and as Star Trek is a lot military and dealing with representatives, not the vast array of laymen, we're more apt to see ideals and not exceptions. i don't know, and maybe if suddenly the human race felt small, we'd take more into account and act more according to what makes us us in contrast to others. in a room of all humans, there's a huge rainbow of our individuality. in a room where we may be the only human, we might tend to cling to what makes us human not just what makes us individually us. |

Voyager is one of those, "Some great episodes, some really bad episodes", series for me. I've read somewhere that they had many writers who deal with different episodes, so Captain Janeway is a bit inconsistent when it comes to her personality (as if some writers didn't read or watch the 1000000 hours of Star Trek material to be up to date). It's been a while since I've seen any Voyager, but I remember being confused and angry at one where 7 of 9 wanted to save a creature and Janeway was for sacrificing it or something along that vein. Ok, not very helpful, I know.

Best episodes at the top of my head.
Deep Space Nine: Kira finds a Cardassian War Criminal and wants to kill him. Things aren't the way it seems. TNG: Picard being caught by Cardassians and shown "3 lights" or something like that. TNG: "All Good Things" TNG: The episode with the flute. Voyager: Most depressing. Red planet. Voyager Clones. Voyager: The Doctor copy being a Hero for a whole civilization. Deep Space Nine: Kira finding out she's a Cardassian. (not a spoiler) And there's a lot of others. Also I notice that Cardassians seems to be a running theme in what I like/dislike. Probably because they are Space Nazis. Some of them anyway. |

Janeway was on point. it'd be like if the Christians said the giant asteroid hurtling toward us was God and Bruce Willis better not drill a hole in it. |

ugh. gross. that episode where Seven of Nine makes a false assault accusation and then in the end feels correctly guilty about it and we all feel bad for the guy.
lesson: girls, you could very well just be making it up so drop it before you kill someone. VOY S4E07: Retrospect |
