In the UK and Oz, we aren't quite as free as in the fair land of the cheeseheads. PC is fucked. We should all have the right to say what we want, no matter how fucked, and to not suffer consequences (yelling "fire" in a theatre excluded, naturally). Protectecting rights based on peoples feels rather than their physical safety (i.e. "fire") is bullshit. |

You have freedom of speech. But freedom of speech works both ways. You can say nigger, cunt, etc. But the people who hear you also have the freedom of speech to say, "That's shitty of you."
Freedom of speech does not equal freedom from criticism, and does not equal freedom from consequences. There are consequences to what we do. I think the worst thing about the Paula Deen case is that now we have our sacrificial lamb, and we get to act all pious and shit while she crashes and burns because she's the villain, and yet we continue to not have a real conversation about race relations in America and how racism still affects our culture.

however (paula the internet moron aside) removing a person's ability to earn a living treads into the realm of censorship. take the dixie chicks. i fucking hate their music, however they make a statement about GWB, and suddenly they're fucked up the arse professionally. you do that, and the next time someone wants to speak out, they'll think twice... If speech was truly free, then we wouldn't see bullshit like "the n-word" being used. We would be able to say "nigger", and people, regardless of skin colour' would not be pissed off. Nigger is just a fucking word. Poeple need to get the fuck over it. But i hear your point about paula and the avoidence of a real race relations debate. and fucking split this post up if you need to reply to different bits. as i get drunker, it's fucking hard to parse out what's what bby

Frankly, I think "whiskey tango" is a better term than "cracker." I'm an old guy, but when I grew up "cracker" referred to whites from Georgia, specifically. If you were from South Carolina you were a "sand lapper" or if you were from North Carolina you were a "tar heel."
Cracker can be a reference to "cracking the whip" or it can be a reference to the hardtack that many of the colonists survived on when GA was first established. By the way, GA was a prison colony for debtors. Sandlapper can refer to a British taunt about how the SC milita always dove headfirst in the sand when fired upon (not the stupidest move) or it can refer to pellagra, a nutritional deficiency that can cause sufferers to eat sand, dirt, or clay. Tarheel was a reference both to the pine tar that the state was famous for and the fact that the soldiers from NC were often barefoot. I could go on about how each of these terms was used either as a pejorative or as a compliment at various times and by various people, but you guys can use the google device for all that if you want to go down the rabbit hole. I could also go on about how "nigger/nigga" means something different when Paula Dean says it, or when Tracy Marrow uses it. Since it's a KATG thread, it seems appropriate to mention that "nerd" can have different connotations too. Words mean things. If you use words, particularly if you're a public figure, you had better be prepared to defend your use of the words you choose and the context you choose to use them in. If you're a public figure and you don't use words, I guess you're a model or an athlete, so don't be surprised when you're judged purely on your physical attributes. |

Why can't you accept that some words are off limits scumhook? Why the fuck can't you just bend a little and admit that the word, to some people, is too offensive to throw around aimlessly? Why should it rock your boat. You can say whatever the fuck you want in your private life because you have a private life. If you want to sound like an ignorant bastard, knock yourself out.
People like the Dixie Chicks and Paula Deen do not have a private life. They sold their soul to the devil of celebrity so they cannot say whatever the fuck they want and expect the same perks, that is the price of fame. Paula Deen can still make money, just not in the public eye at the moment...boofuckinghoo. No one said she couldn't pick up a job as a fry cook...like any other average joe. |

Paula Deen will be fine. She's been making millions for years, she has more than enough to live on. And all the bigots are lining up at her restaurants in solidarity, so they probably won't even go out of business.

Mad much? I find it odd that there was not a whole lot of "it's just words" comments when Mel Gibson had his antisemitic rants. It's either always ok or its never ok, it can just be hey black people get over it all the time. Last edited by da_ticklah; 07-03-2013 at 05:58 PM. |
