For family/parent's friends: kiss on cheek from only once to up to 3 times.
For friends, it depends on who. Depending on the person I either kiss them on the cheek, hug them, or do nothing. |

Here in Brazil it is common to give one kiss on the cheek, but not between two guys, only girl-girl and guy-girl. Guys just slap their hands in a sort of a handshake if they are already friends or they just nod. You might have just met the person and there you are with the air kiss, I guess that comes with our latin roots. And there is also a regional difference, I don't know about every state, but in São Paulo it is just one kiss and I know in Rio you're supposed to give one kiss for each cheek. Older people will usually give three kisses (and the third one is usually followed by the unfunny joke "three to get married"). I usually just hug my close friends and family. You sort of get used to the kiss on the cheek thing, especially if you've been doing it since you become a teen.

I hug and kiss some of my friends and not others. Same with family. It just depends on what they are comfortable with. Personally, I am a big hugger. I used to NOT be into it at all, but years of practice has made it seem normal. |
