Handbrake and dvd catalyst in the applications thread. I always preferred dvd catalyst but I heard Handbrake updated with nice things.

how 'bout one for a couple bucks that is easy to use. one where you rip the movie on the dvd to an ipod compatibale file that looks good on a decent sized monitor too? one that doesn't require the user to figure out which cryptic file needs to be converted. Is there any commercial software that makes puting your DVD collection onto your hard drive, at great quality, in an ipod compatible format easy?

OK nerds. Seriously.

Have you ever ripped an audio CD? When you rip an audio CD for use on the computer you drop in the disc and click one or two buttons. After those one or two clicks your music-CD is available to your iPod or available for play on your computer.

The stuff recommended so far doesn't do this for DVDs.
