Everyone's video in the KATG chat

I added a video feature to the Chat Room - Keith and The Girl page.

To add your video:
1) Create a ustream account
2) Go through the process to Broadcast Now
3) make sure you click Start Broadcasting when you're on ustream
4) Copy the url of the page you broadcast from. Mine looks like http://www.ustream.tv/broadcaster/4929497
5) Go to Chat Room - Keith and The Girl
6) right click your own name
7) click "Save you webcam broadcast url"
8) paste that into the textbox and hit save

Now when you broadcast on ustream everyone in the chat can see you.

To see someone who's got their cam on:
1) right click their name
2) click "View webcam"

To stop seeing them
1) right click their name
2) click "View webcam"

Changes I'm planning on making
Right clicking to get the controls seems like a pain. I think I'm going to make a dropdown list of everyone who's in the chat with a webcam. You'll then be able to select their name and add them from there.

To remove someone you'll do it through the same dropdown.

To add your broadcast code I'm going to make a link in the gray bar for that.

Remove the katg video streams when they're not broadcasting.

What other changes would you like to see?

Rhian 07-11-2010 08:01 AM

Worked! Thank you Michael!

Newsy 07-11-2010 11:13 AM

Oh Michael... this is simply wonderful... Is there any amount of cameras that can be loaded?

Seriously man, aces.

MichaelApproved 07-11-2010 02:38 PM

You can load all the cameras you like. The only limit is your screen size.

Sparrow 07-11-2010 04:25 PM

so, we're broadcasting through ustream. Does that mean while I'm chitty chat chatting in /chat there'll be a passle of ustream strangers watching via ustream.com? and will we have to deal with ustream mods and other assorted nerd assholes?

Yes. This isn't much different than being on live video where can see you there too.

There is the chance that you'll have to deal with the mods but the way the system is built you can use a different account if you get banned with one. If we find that ustream isn't friendly to katg chat room then I can implement another stream service. Now that the basic system is built it'll be easier to add other services.

Sparrow 07-12-2010 06:24 AM

Thanks, Michael!

aunt_helen 07-12-2010 03:37 PM

Thank you so much, Michael. I've hated having to use LiveVideo to chat with all my KATG-based friends. This is a bright day in a lot of lonely nerds' lives. :D

Ryan_1523 07-12-2010 08:25 PM

I'm not sure if it explains this anywhere.. Is there an age limit? I wouldn't really mind coming to chill now and then, but I don't really want it to be awkward..

Soo, maybe there's some kinda written/unwritten code on this I need to be aware of? Thanks for bearing with my ignorance :)

Newsy 07-13-2010 02:20 AM

Is there a way to have a little indicator, that shows who has a camera and who doesn't?

evadwolrab 07-13-2010 12:58 PM

Change your avatar in the chatroom to the camera.

It's manual, but it'll do for now until Michael inevitably gets bored one Sunday afternoon and fiddles with it.

aunt_helen 07-13-2010 09:15 PM

I got to try it out last night. The cams are much larger and sharper than in the old LV, and while it was a real challenge to coordinate the Ustream interface and the chat interface, I managed to figure it out while both high and drunk. (Thanks, Brenkin.)

I did notice a couple of bugs. I was only able to bring up two cams at a time. The second dock after the main KATG dock was always occupied but empty, without the option to take it out, and then there were two spaces to the right of that for other chatters' cams. If I brought up two cams, it worked fine, but then if I wanted to switch out one cam for another, half the cam tier would clear out and go blank (the two rightmost cams). Then if I tried to bring up a third cam in the open space, the previous two cams would open up instead. This would be the case until I reloaded the room.

I'm not complainin', but if there's someone trying to troubleshoot the chat, I hope that helps. Also, none of this worked until I used Firefox, whereas I had to use Safari with the old LV chat on my Mac.

See you fuckers on there! Goddamn you're a fugly-hot bunch.

Sparrow 07-14-2010 05:58 AM

I had that problem, too. A mysterious unbroadcasting cam I couldn't figure out whose it was, so I couldn't close it.

elastoplastic 07-14-2010 02:24 PM

doesn't work for me :(

Boo,

ever since this "upgrade" I can only see 2 ustream windows and neither are the main window. AND trying to share my video never works :(. (edit: this is because I never read Michael's first post, just heard about the new chat in the show. Did they mention the thread? whatevs)

Here's what the chat looks like for me.
Attachment 56868(edit: changed photo... thanks @annie!)

I experience the same thing on both firefox and Chrome.

I'm on Mac OS 10.6.4.

Any suggestions?

dangerous 07-16-2010 02:00 PM

it works on my chrome just right click on someone's name in the right hand bar and click view camera. on an off topic note since the techs are on this thread how do you embed youtube videos into your forum posts?

punk'n 07-16-2010 02:18 PM

Gonna try it tonight. Wish me luck, I'm a retard with the LV.

OMG, its nerds like you that make people hate nerds.

If you read my post you'd see its not seeing other's videos I'm having trouble with. It's that in the main chat window, I can't hear the show, because the main Ustream window isn't in the video section, and if I can add it, I don't see how.

The forum has a great way to embed youtube videos. Just type [youtube] [ /youtube] (without the space in the second set of brackets) then place the bold part (below) of any youtube address in between those sets of brackets.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEZNDO4pdys&feature=related

So copy the letters and numbers after the v= and before the &feature that are a part of any youtube web address.

Same thing happens to me. I can't see Keith's main cam anymore. Not even if I click onto the Ustream page. I stream the audio through either iTunes or through the desktop app. But it sucks not being able to see Keith's cam.

punk'n 07-16-2010 10:06 PM

I tried it tonight and it gave me an error. I can log in but I can't get the cam to work. Is there special mac instructions?

What was the error you got? Which browser are you using?

MichaelApproved 07-16-2010 10:22 PM

Sorry I haven't been able to respond to all the issues in the thread. I have been keeping up with it though and will release another wave of changes to address the issues.

I'm using firefox. It said my cam was streaming but I couldn't see myself and no one else could either. When I right-clicked, it just told me that it was working, but I couldn't see it. I'm also not very good at technical things, so it's probably user error.

Did you follow the steps in Michael's first post? Just cuirous because I didn't at first and was having problems.

Sparrow 07-17-2010 10:28 PM

I'm about to complain, but I want to first profusely thank Michael for taking on this long awaited process. Let's make this something awesome!

1) I hate using a third party. It's laggy, complicated when I'm high, and having the extra chat window open all the time is a bummer. I would really love to see us support our own whatever so that it's a simple one stop shop.

2) old chat still disconnects me without warning. all the time. it's frustrating not knowing if the chat is quiet or if I've been kicked out. Also, it think it's THE most important thing I'm doing and while I'm in another window, should somebody enter/exit/talk it pops right up--this one might be user error, in which case how do I make that stop?

The bandwidth to do host this internally is really expensive. Using a 3rd party service makes it possible to host endless P!SP!

If you find that it's too complicated to setup when you're high then I suggest you set it up sober and leave it on all the time. If you're using a laptop I would also recommend taking it with you everywhere you go.

The disconnect problem is probably an issue with your internet connection.

To stop the window from popping up: Click the control panel icon to show that setting among others. It's next to the smily face which is above where you enter your chat text.

MichaelApproved 07-18-2010 12:52 AM

Added remove link to the upper right of the video window. Now when you add a video you'll see that persons name in the order you added. To remove a window just click the link with their name on it. Not sure who's window it is? Just count the videos from left to right (not including the KATG videos) and look for the name from top to bottom.

MichaelApproved 07-18-2010 01:10 AM

I removed the option to manually set your status to broadcasting or not. Now you just see if the person put in their code or they didn't.

If the person put in their ustream embed code you'll see a green icon. If they haven't you'll see the white one.

Can you see yourself if you go to your ustream page? If not then you need to make sure you're broadcasting correctly. Typically what happens is people forget to actually click the broadcast button.

If you CAN see yourself on your ustream page then make sure you entered in the correct embed code.

Thanks, Michael! What fine prompt service from our Everything Solution team. <3

aunt_helen 07-19-2010 01:26 AM

Yes, thank you so much, Michael. The new chat is a lot of fun and I hope a bunch of people take advantage of it. TIDDAYS!

DaHonay 07-19-2010 12:36 PM

Hoping to get in and try it out during today's show but not sure if I can log in or not.

We used to use UStream when we did our live shows... the 1st time titties came out, we had our channel AND IP address banned. I hope that there's some greasing of the mods palms. If there aren't titties... there's no use for vid chat. :p;)

Isn't there a way to change or hide or reroute your IP address? HALP PUHLEEZE!

elastoplastic 07-19-2010 03:46 PM

Just checked. Still can't hear the show in the chat. I can see a window that isn't streaming, and one where I can see Chemda. But that's it.

HELP!

I wish I could take credit for the fix but it I think it happened because Keith didn't have the feed on.

Actually, I will take credit for it. You're welcome ; )

Hi Michael -- and thanks for making the chat video capable! It looks awesome.

I know you don't have time to respond to everyone's issues, but I'll add mine to the mix in the case others are experiencing similar issues.

I registered for ustream, got a "show," and I am positive that I was "broadcasting" (I did click the "broadcast now" button and I could see myself on cam). However, when I logged into the KATG chat and tried to "save webcam broadcast URL", I got a popup message that said "you must be logged in to do that." I was definitely logged into the KATG chat (I could chat with others) and I was still broadcasting on Ustream at the same time.

Any ideas?

BTW, I'm on a Mac OSX and using the latest Firefox.

Best to you!
Oleander

That's a bug with the login process that I seriously need to fix. For now if you refresh the page by pressing F5 or close and reopen it the error will go away.

Thanks for responding Michael.

I tried F5, opening and closing, and I tried on Safari and it still says "you must be logged in."
