How much do YOU rely the Internet? (Research for TV!)

Hi guys,

I'm currently in the middle of an internship at the BBC, and I've been asked to help out with research on a programme my department are interested in making about (very basically) how 'web 2.0' and the new 'power of the individual' that this fosters is affecting (and will go on to affect) our lives.

Research is pretty informal at the moment as we've just started it, and I'm trying to get a variety of opinions. If any of you have 15 mins to answer the following questions, I'd really, really, appreciate it. I needs me some quotes!

What do you use the internet for?

How long do you use the internet for on an average day?

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them?

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount)

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites?

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways?

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this?

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder?

What do you use the internet for?
Everything: Work, uni, communication, entertainment...

How long do you use the internet for on an average day?
Depends: At work? All day. At Uni? 3-4hrs. Weekends? 4-5 hrs.

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them?
Not really. A few acquaintances I keep in touch with semi-regularly.

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount)
Yep. Every other day?

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites?
Meh

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways?
Not really.

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this?
Easy.

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder?
Harder. Drrr.

1. Mostly social networking, chat, news, pornography and most common internet things.
2. Usually 4 or five hours on and off. Probably usually around three hours of active usage.
3. A heap. I've got a lot of internet only friends that I've mostly met through here that I keep in contact daily.
4. If I produce any original content, it immediately occurs to me to upload it, whether to Flickr or Youtube or Twitter or Facebook or Myspace. It doesn't alarm me though. It's just like telling everyone you know what you did.
5. I think about it sometimes, but mostly I just put anything up online and am willing to face repercussions. I'm honest, I'll put just about anything up.
6. Of course. On the internet I am far more 'talkative' and confident and better to socialise with especially with girls, mostly because they scare me in real life. Not being face to face helps me with nerves and stuff.
7. It's easy. You just choose a trend (like twitter) once everyone is already on it, or at least a big enough number for you to be interested to either fill out a profile or post content. I don't feel pressure, because in most cases I get what I want out of the internet already. You have to give me something new.
8. It'd fucking suck. I'd have to talk to people and leave my house. It'd make it far harder to do everything I'm used to do.

What do you use the internet for? I work in technology and the internet. Then I go home and play fetch with it.

How long do you use the internet for on an average day? More than 6 hours a day on weekdays, maybe one to two hours on weekend days.

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them? Yes, and some have become business relationships or person-to-person friendships. Hell, my last move, house hunt, job hunt, and political affliation all started through the internet.

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount) Not really.

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites? Yes.

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways? No.

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this? Yes, but because it's work related. I have to stay current with, for example, the latest Cisco certification. I would say that I am much more interested in innovations than in trends, however.

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder? You mean other than losing my job? Yes, my life would be harder but I'd get over it.

What do you use the internet for?
Socially (Facebook, e-mail, MSN, Forums/BBS' etc...), banking needs, entertainment, shopping, blogging, volunteering (i.e. spending time helping people with content/site upkeep), at my job and research while in university.

How long do you use the internet for on an average day?
5 or 6 hours on-and-off. I don't think I can go more than an hour sitting in front of the computer... It could be that I know it's bad for my eyes or it's just my attention span.

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them?
Only acquaintances. You get to know people on BBS/forums, but I never have become what I would consider "friends" to these people.
I do keep in touch with people I know and see everyday/once and a while via internet. I've been able to keep some friendships afloat (i.e. they live too far away to see) thanks to the internet.

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount)
Depending on the situation... A blog I post what I want when I want. But when it comes to social sites like Facebook I sometimes do find I'm annoying the hell out of everyone and will stop posting things for weeks on end.

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites?
It depends on the social networking site. Some places I have family, other places I have co-workers. So, the content is filtered depending on who's on that site. I think a lot less about it if the people I'm sharing the items with are complete strangers to me.

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways?
Yes and no; again it depends on who's using what site. In most cases, the internet is considered a holy grail of anonymity (most of the time); I can chose how I'd like to present myself -- but I never tend to take advantage. It's usually what you read is who you get.

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this?
When it comes to social networking sites it would depend on where the rest of my social connections are. There are just way too many -- I tend to chose one and stick with it. If I find that the majority of my social circle have abandoned one thing for another, like a sheep I'll follow along. If you use those methods to keep in touch with people, it makes no sense to use it by yourself.
I do always try to know/learn about what's the latest internet trending. This way, when I do decide to switch I know how to use it and what I'm getting into.

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder?
Life would be a million times harder without the internet. It has become a day to day thing in both my working life and private life. I would also lose contact with so many people and I don't think I would be as "cultured" (for lack of a better word) in some aspects I guess (i.e. podcasting wouldn't exist, less exposure to world musics, less likely to as questions etc...).
But I don't think my life would come to an end.

Good luck with your research!

What do you use the internet for?
Varies from day to day, I'd say mostly to catch up on news events and research for things I need or use.

How long do you use the internet for on an average day?
I use the internet for 5-6 hours a day at work and typically an hour or so at home. 2-4 hours on the weekends

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them?
Not really, and not very often

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount)
I don't have a facebook or a blog, don't see any purpose in me having either

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites?
The only type of social networking sites that I'm affiliated with at all are forum type environments such as this. Other than that myspace, facebook, twitter, all useless to me.

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways?
Never

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this?
Never feel pressure, although I do tend to be behind on the "social" aspects of the internet (see references to social networking sites above) and seem to always be on the line with the technical aspects.

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder?
Not sure how I'd feel. I think it might add a little more self reliance and force me to be more decisive instead of always wanting to get other peoples opinions on things through the web. Easier? No. Better? Quite possibly.

What do you use the internet for? Learning tings, the forums, keeping up with family, and porn

How long do you use the internet for on an average day? All day long, I'm constantly on my phone checking the forums.

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them? Almost all of my friendships, the whole not comfortable talking to people face to face, looking them in the eyes, and such really affects my relationships with everyone.

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? Rarely, if ever.

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites? I used to, but not I think "Who gives an f?"

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways? 100% YES! In real life I'm quiet and always looking down, tapping my fingers against stuff, and counting random things I see. My personality online was shaped by one post I read on a thread in this forum that suggested to new members "Just act like what you're posting is the most important thing in the world" or something close to that. That was about three monthes ago, I posted roughly 163 posts since then.

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this? Meh, I'm just starting to friend people on Facebook. For the longest time I was just friends with Patrice and Matt Bray. But I'm starting to make friends at work and my two friend wall was just sad.

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder? I would just have to dig a hole climb inside and bury myself. No Katg, No Forums, No Reason to Live.

2-3 hours

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them?
not really.

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount)
ALL the time. Every semi-clever thought that runs thru my head ends up on twitter.

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites?
language wise? no. i use some descretion with pictures.

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways?
somewhat- it's much easier to argue over the internet rather than face to face.

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this?
it's hard when you don't have an iphone or a phone with the same capabilities. they're simply too expensive.

[B]And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder?
harder. i keep up woth friends and use it as a communication tool. not to mention i use it everyday at school for research.

What do you use the internet for? Work, school, Live Video, facebook, sometimes games.

How long do you use the internet for on an average day? I am on the computer all day for work and school.

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them? Not many, but several. Mostly old friends that I am not in touch with anymore that I only communicate with through facebook.

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount) Sometimes. I make it a random musing rather than a full-on blog.

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites? I used to, not so much anymore. I am much more worried about what I would post here where I cannot control who sees it.

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways? Sure - I am much more bold online. In person I am much more shy and polite.

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this? Not at all. It moves too fast and I don't care that much.

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder? Much harder, even though I am the kind of person that can make do. I was doing just fine pre-internet. Even in school, though the info is on the computer in front of me, I still take notes longhand. Some habits don't die that fast.

What do you use the internet for?
- Paying Bills, Downloading, Music, my job uses an online data base for instructions which I have to use daily, myspace, renting videos...

How long do you use the internet for on an average day?
- Id guess 4 hours for sure, but it varries, on weekends not as much

Do you have many friendships that are mainly internet-based? How often are you in touch with them?

- not too many, basically my relatives out of state and its on a social network but I dont really chat too much

Do you ever find yourself thinking ‘Oh, I should put that on facebook/my blog?’ If so, how often? (I do this a worryingly frequent amount)
- no. The only thing I regulate are pictures where I look shitty. Its all work appropriate for the most part since im a state employee but there are way too many employeed for them to check up on us through those sites.

Do you think much about what you do and don’t post on social networking sites?
- no. I never really post anything inapropriate because I have tact so its a non-issue.

Would you say that you act differently on the internet to how you do in real life in some ways?
- when it comes to forums/chat etc I suppose, I'd say I speak out more than I usually would when using things like that.

Do you find it easy or difficult to keep with the latest internet trends and innovations? Do you ever feel pressure to do this?
- when I was younger easy, but technology is getting crazy. I dont twitter, have an I -phone or use Itunes, its all too much for me. Sometimes I feel some pressure especially when you see news stroies about the latest trend (like twitter) but its all a fad, by the time I would learn it I'm sure it wouldn't be cool anymore.

And finally, how would you feel if you no longer had the internet in your life? Would your life be made easier or harder?
-harder for sure. I use it for so many random things now like the tvguide, celeb gossib, listening to podcasts etc. Ive become so reliant on getting any question I have answered by logging on that taking it away would be life changing. Its convienant.
