It was an honest question brought up by several people, me included, about the ethics of hawking product for money on a fan forum. No one was attacking Latta personally, and as far as I could read, there wasn't malice intended - just bringing up a discussion that provokes debate.

I know some of you feel like any controversy is some horrendous calamity to be avoided at all costs, and retreat into defensive anger when there's anything serious to be discussed. But there is a way to debate an ethical topic in a respectful manner in order to clarify one's feelings and parameters on behavior, and it's a very important skill to learn. Retreating into passive-aggression isn't the only reaction to disagreement. You can hash things out and still feel okay. Agree to disagree. Prove your point. Quote and explain.

It started with me asking if he can draw all of the usual suspects from the cruise and more requests grew from there. Understandably this is a lot of work and effort for him when he could be drawing actual revenue producing items. I haven't had a chance to even email him to find out what the small donation is but I'm sure it's priced as a nice token of our appreciation. Bottom line, we requested these, he didn't solicit.

I think the difference is Max was posing as a friend of KATG (the two people not the community) and services that Max normally provides at a profit weren't being requested of him by the KATG community, Latta's were....this is not the equivalent

Agreed. It isn't the same thing. I haven't read every word; but I thought Latta made one for the Keiths and Chemda, and people just started asking him for more and donating.

Your republican brethren would be ashamed of you. I thought you people were all about business. Chemda had to almost come out and beg you to promote yourself. There is nothing shady about making money as a result of friendships, as long as no one is being exploited.

You seem to be implying that he's "networking" here for the express purpose of selling drawings.

Latta is contributing to the forums fun. Latta's just doing favors for friends, and friends are showing gratitude IMO. He never set a price. He just said that a donation would be nice, which is fair, even if doing favors for friends.

can we stop directly addressing latta's stuff here? it was merely the catalyst prompting the ethical question that goes far beyond just this single case.

i was hoping for a discussion, a clarification from the community we could all stand by, really, of where we as a community can and cant go. honestly, i was hoping someone else would essentially say, "the line is here, latta is fine, no further."

see,the problem is, if i say it, because of the urban legend of who i am, it looks like im trying to control things, and if thats adopted as the gold standard by the mods, it looks like some inner circle crap again. so i was hoping to prod some people into thinking for themselves, and determining that line on their own, through logic. through their own sense of moral fortitude. or even out of personal greed, a desire to keep the forums more or less the way they are.

but people(in general, not in particular) cant help but make personal attacks anytime they disagree, instead of actually saying what they disagree about.

so, for that, i apologize. i overestimated you guys. people, for the most part, even when led around by their nose, really cant seem to look past their own ego. and im way too ignorant of the nature of people in general to have realized that, and i feel just as stupid as you guys probably do, if for different reasons. maybe even more so.

i will speak no further on this, except to say that i believe this is where the line should be. if anyone takes it further, i will personally go after them, and make it more trouble than its worth to post, even if i am alone in that. especially if it makes me unpopular, as its evident where popularity seems to lead.

im sorry we are, as a whole, fucking idiots, myself included. we should all be ashamed.
