Kindle Fire
Who has one? Do you like it? Possible to DL podcasts to it or only streaming?
The GF really wants one for Christmas but I'm not sure about browser functionality [since it's new] and the podcast thing. |

What I'm seeing in the various Amazon customer discussions about this is that they have to be in MP3 format, downloaded on your PC and then transferred to the Kindle Fire. Otherwise there would have to be an app for it that is functional with the Fire (but I didn't find any of those on the Amazon app store). I imagine those will become available once the device has been out for a bit longer.

Even if the podcasting capabilities are not there right now in the immediate months after release, there will be apps that let you download them. I saw a lot of chatter about the topic when I tried to google finding you an answer. There's a definite demand for it.

Go to Best Buy and check it out, browse the App Store and get some free apps.
Things you need: 1. Opera Mini or Mobile 2. Meridian Player Both are free in the Amazon App Store, and if they run on the Kindle then that'll take care of your surfing/podcasting needs (unless you want a podcatcher, which I've never looked into on android). Android stock browsers always blow balls, but Opera is good and free. You can download podcasts via Opera and play it on Meridian Player (Android stock media players also blow balls). You may need an SD card. I don't own a Kindle, but I have an Android phone and Nook Tablet. That's what I've been using to do all my media consuming, and the strategy to "extend" nook's usefullness was basically to sideload some apps that let me run the Amazon App Store and then get access to all the free apps and whatever I bought for my phone. |

Of interest to anyone considering a Fire purchase here
I went to Target and played with one for a little bit. It seemed fine but I'll agree, a bit heavy for extended reading time. What really irked me was the inability to play with the web browser at all. They are marketing this all new super-speed "split browser" that does some of it's processing from the cloud but all you get if you tap the browser is a short [less than 2 minute] demo. For now I say fuck 'em. Gonna look at different Android based tablets. |
