Mama's in jail
A friend of mine told me recently that his mom (sentenced to 4 years in prison for a series of drug charges) just recently was given $200 on her commissary by her boyfriend. Two weeks later all that money is gone and she is asking him for more. Now on to his and I's collective ignorance...that seems to me to be a rather large sum of money to go through in two weeks, or am I just being stupid? He's talked about putting $50 a week or every other week on her commissary. Should that be enough?
She broke up with her boyfriend and now the responsibility of dealing with her attorney falls to my friend. He's told the attorney to not help her get out and leave her in there for the full sentence if he can. Which led to another tirade by his mother claiming that she didn't do anything wrong, that he doesn't want to help his mother, yada yada yada. Yesterday he sent me this e-mail... Quote:

Stay the fuck out of it. If your friend wants to vent, just be there for that, but do not get involved with this.
Ask yourself, What Would Dina Do? In fact, this may be a good Dina question. |

i agree with all of this. also, i just visited a prison for school and the inmates told me that the tvs they are able to buy cost around $150 and they can also buy things like shoes and makeup and curling irons and hair dryers. since she's in on drug charges she's probably got access to more things like this than you think. plus prison food is gross. wouldn't you want to buy stuff like ramen noodles and potato chips rather than eat some weird mystery meat slop? it seems like a lot of money to go through quickly, but it depends on what she's buying. she could be buying stuff and trading it for drugs, too. there are a lot of ways she could've burned through the money. either way, it's really not your problem, even if he's asking for your advice. he knows his mom and he probably knows what he needs to do and just wants someone to listen. |
