How far outside of Manhattan do I need to go to find the "real American" stuff, like IHOP and Best Buy? Can it be done by subway only?

Closest Best Buy to Midtown is 43rd and 5th.

There are IHOPs in Brooklyn and New Jersey, but...eww...gross! Yes, you can get there by subway. Brooklyn, not New Jersey.

You can take the A or the C train to the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station and walk two blocks to 276 Livingston Street, Brooklyn. It's not too bad an area. Less than 20 minutes on the train from midtown.
