David Pogue's missing manuals are good for jumping into OS X. I came to it through Unix so I've just sorta learned by fiddling.

Apps I can't live without:
Quicksilver (application launcher/kung fu doer)
Evernote (notes etc archiver)
Skitch (screen snapping doodley greatness)
Textmate (text editor)
Pidgin (IM MultiClient(
Growl (Alert Thing)
Transmission (Turrent)
Transmit (File Transfer)

and I'm sure there's stuff I'm forgetting.

of course the pro does not come with a webcam. those fuckers. ont two usb ports thats weak. For me I need at least 4 but I do know that you can buy an adapter for more. And then how easy is it for me to transfer all my files over to a Mac. I believe it should be not too bad? Thanks for your help and time I really appreciate it. especially after a tough night last night.

I'm trying to block out last night, Crosby holding a cup made me want to gouge out my eyes.

OS X has native samba support so you just transfer it over your network. If you're real real lazy you can have em do it at the apple store for free.

It made me happy it wasn't holmstrom he should die immediately. What is the standard warranty for a Mac? and is it worth it to do the apple care i believe is what it is called?

Everybody who isn't a wings fan hates holmstrom, it's the cost of being a trouble maker.

1 year, the apple care is a good idea if you take care of your stuff. I don't get it because I bounce my shit off the ground at least a couple times a month and if you're missing giant pieces of your laptop they won't honor the apple care. However if you are a responsible human being, the apple care is great for stuff like drive or display failure that can cost you some bucks and pain.

Bear with me, we don't have an Apple store in my town

In previous discussion about the aluminum 13" Macbook, it was supposedly super-crazy-easy to change the hard drive.

I'm ready to buy a $1100 13" MBP, but that 160GB hard drive isn't likely going to be the last one I would ever have in there.

Have any of you actually worked on one of the newest generaton 13" models? How easy is it to upgrade the hard drive and ram on the newest 13MBP?

================

Also, once I get this thing I'll be needing an office suite and vector graphics package.

In Windows I'm using Open Office and a bootleg of M$ Office, what is a good free app for Mac?

In Windows I use Xara for vector graphics. Is there a comparable cheap/good/(or free) 2-D vector graphics tool that you would recommend for Mac?

Also,

they offer free ipods and $50 discounts for students.

Any tricks for grabbing these discounts without being currently enrolled?

Is it just a matter of claiming to be a student at some university?

I think you'd probably have to show some form of current University ID, or some proof of enrollment.

Having a uni id or email will do the trick especially in the summer.
