My macbook pro is intel based.

As long as you have at least 1G of Ram, you should be able to install SL.

How can I backup everything on my macbook pro running tiger? I'm about to upgrade to SL. I need a backup of everything. Apple wants you to buy everything and put it all on their server. I got all that music fair and square and I ain't sharing.

Buy a USB/Firewire drive of at least the same size as your HD and use Carbon Copy Cloner (free - Carbon Copy Cloner - Home) or SuperDuper! (costs) to image your whole drive over. You can then boot off that drive if your system drive dies.

I use SuperDuper! and have it run an image of my Tb drive twice a day.

*edit - you may not be able to boot off it from USB on Tiger or it might depend on how old the Mac is.

Time machine works too - that major difference is that Time Machine uses archiving and is not bootable. With the solutions I put up that drive can be booted from or even plugged into another Mac and access the files.

Got my own little issue now.
When i run my mbp on bootcamp (WIndows 7 x64) i can connect to the internet fine. When i then transfere back to SL i cannot connect to the net. I am going through a router that is connected to another then a modem (long story). my housemates on windows connect fine through the other router that is connected directly to the modem and i connect fine when on mine with windows 7. I can connect to the router but not the net, and when i try to access the router it keeps restarting itself. What could be causing this issue?
