PA system question

I'm doing stand up these days and would like a set up that i could bring into bars that don't already have some sort of set up. sadly my knowledge only extends to "well it's just a guy with a mic so it's not as complicated as a band playing."

I figure there are plenty of artists here that could weigh in on this. The questions I have are:

What's a good small set up for a bar that would hold 30 to 150 people?
What would I need to also be able to play music from an ipod thru the speakers?
About how much money am I looking at spending on this?
Is there any thing I should be wary of if i were to go thru craiglist?

Thanks guys

Get a single powered speaker on a stick; they usually accept a mic and have a second jack to feed in your ipod. Large crowds might need a second speaker but by then clubs shud have PA for you.

I seriously recommend renting this stuff first. You can try different brands/sizes etc. Find a local rental company and rent only when you have a gig. Music stores often do this stuff too if you are in a small town. Speaker/stand/mic shud be less than $100/day.

Plenty of gear in used places - try second hand music stores/pawn shops. Always power up gear a blast bass heavy music and listen for rattles or fire.

Watch for a battery powered speaker - handy for outdoor gigs or for when plugs are miles away.

Budget $300-500 for a powered speaker like this.

Make sure you have a tripod stand to get the speaker up above table level. $100

You will also need a Shure SM58 microphone - $50-125

Power bar, 50' mic cable and long ipod-1/4" cable will be another $50-100.
