The podcast411 jay thomas show breakdown

For those of you who didn't catch paul_r's post in the Show Talk forum, this is what Keith was talking about in the last show:

http://media.libsyn.com/media/podcast411/411_060804.mp3

(I just had to dig through the 10 page thread, so I thought I'd save y'all the trouble)

I could totally hear the sound of false hope in jay's voice when talking about having a million listeners... I wonder if he'll continue doing the show when the actual figures come out, if he finds out he condescended to people with a bigger audience than his.

to put the Sirius figures in perspective the UK Radio Audience figures came out today.
  • Over 2.5 million listeners tune into BBC digital radio services (you need a new radio for this)
  • BBC Radio 2 adds over 2 million listeners in a year
  • Weekly Reach - All BBC 33 Million
  • Weekly Reach - BBC Radio 1 10 Million
  • Weekly Reach - BBC Local / Regional 11 Million
  • Magic FM in London has 1.87 million listeners (Weekly)

so 4.5 million subscribers for the whole USA isn't that good.

i'm not surprised car company's are jumping on board, but you have to wonder if it weren't for satelite radio showing the world that broadcasting corporations actually would find a way to charge the listeners for audio programming, would podcasting have blown up as fast as it has?

it definitely seems like the instinct to have access to free information and entertainment will remain dominate (even if the audio is of lesser quality and/or comes with advertisements). i think the instinct to find the real people and the real, un-preprocessed ideas also plays a huge role in its success.

I think there are plenty of people who would gladly pay for quality content, just not enough for an entire satellite network. I would pay for KATG, as long as the price was right.
Crap, what if everyone subscribed at US$1 a month? How many subscribers are there now? One dollar for around 20 episodes, usually an hour each.

How much of a one-buck does Paypal keep?

Well, roughly 50,000 (and growing) people listen to every show. So if you look at a one month thing, then it would be around $1,000,000 if every one contributed. To put things a bit more realistically, if even just fifty people donated one dollar per show you'd be looking at a grand per month.
